BLACK HEART GOLD PODCAST EP. 18: YOUR SOUTHERN CAN IS MINE

This is the one where we discuss the Orange Bowl, where the Hawkeyes overran Georgia Tech.  Sherman would have been proud.  We also talk about where this team fits in the hierarchy of Iowa teams of the last 30 years, and whether Kirk Ferentz has offically passed Hayden Fry.  There's even some time for random screaming about basketball at the end.

Listen below or on iTunes.

1 vote for Hayden (but it is close)

Hayden = 3 Big Ten Championships
Ferentz = 2 Big Ten Championships

Hayden = 3 Rose Bowls
Ferentz = 2 BCS Bowls, no Rose Bowls (2002 not really Ferentz’s fault)

Hayden Fry has a better career record against ISU. 15 in a row.

Starting every season, I want to:
1) Beat Iowa State
2) Win the BigTen
3) Go to the Rose Bowl (system is weird now, I know. Still, that’s what I want.)

I think Ferentz will pass Hayden, but he hasn’t yet.

By the way, I liked the story about walking out of the ISU game in 2002 trying to give away the ’86 Rose Bowl shirt. I called my Dad after that game and said I thought Ferentz would get fired at the end of the year.

I haven’t lived that one down yet. Nor should I. In my defense, I was drunk.

But YMMV. I can certainly see the other side of the argument.

This^

KF may, indeed, pass Hayden in the long run, but he’s not there yet. The other thing I will say about Hayden is that, in addition to being a great coach, he was also an innovator. He is the reason that the Big Ten lost its “three yards and a cloud of dust” image. When he was at SMU, he was the first person to have two WR’s in a wishbone formation. He also has fostered a lot of coaching talent. I think by any measure of “greatness” FWIW, it is Hayden.

The 90 team is what made me an Iowa lifer

I loved Nick Bell and was heartbroken when he didn’t become a megastar in the NFL. Diaco, Merton, Danan Hughes, etc.

My mom taped over the game at Illinois that year (FUCKING SEAN WAX) and I still haven’t forgiven her. Bell went for something like 243 and Alan Cross (I think) had about a 75 yard TD reception down the sideline. That might still be my favorite Iowa game ever.

I've read about this game

Illinois was ranked in the top 5. How is this possible?

Simeon Rice & Kevin Hardy.

Uh, I think.

One of their games was on the BTN once.

Their QB was Jason Verduzco. Who sucked more than his name lets on.

I have a signed Nick Bell Hawks card.

I too really wish he would have made it in the NFL.

Just wanted to weigh in...

…on the KF vs. HF issue. I think that one of the reasons that you have to keep KF just lower that HF in the “pantheon” of Iowa coaches is because one thing: expectation. I looked at it this way; if KF were to come out tomorrow and say he was retiring and we had to look at his legacy would you feel that he lived up to his potential as a head football coach at this University. I would have to say no. I completely believe that KF can win a National Championship and I expect that someday he will. Though, if he were to call it quits before doing so I would not say that he was a worse coach than HF, I would simply put them on about the same level. HF was an innovator and without him KF would not have the success that he has today. It is Ferentz’s job to capitalize on the foundation that was build by Fry.

I tend to agree with OPS about Lickliter this year

I think Barta understands that no matter how bad it is, there is simply nothing there. Firing him this year would just make us have to start over again. It’ll be a long year. It will probably be a long year next year. If there isn’t noticeable progress by the end of next year, then I think he’s gone.

It never gets to be easy

Cosign

I suppose he could have another year to completely empty out CHA and strive for that perfect season, you know – 0 wins.

I think there are two things that would pretty much require termination:

1) Going 0-18 in the Big Ten — that should just be utterly unacceptable.

2) Losing more players to transfer — this is the kiss of death. If he loses more guys (and these were all guys he specifically brought in, not Alford left-overs), then there’s no hope of success and we might as well cut bait and start fresh.

We're going 0-18

Bet on it.

No, we'll beat PSU.

They are almost as bad as us.

We are more talented than Iowa (read: our starting five are all black guys).

But we often play as bad as Iowa.

But we have Talor Battle.

I saw your animation over at BSD.

I was cracking up.

And you forget…..we do have Lil’ John on our side. He’ll make the game winning 3 in both games.

Ferentz

Has dug his own grave with wins. He can’t get away with 6 or 7 win seasons because of his success. (Think loyd carr)

by sfshilo on Jan 11, 2010 9:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

He can't get away with multiple seasons like that, no.

But that’s been the case for a while now — hence the pressure during 05-07.

One 6-6 or 7-5 season isn’t gonna kill him, though.

Big junkies come from little junkies.

by RossWB on Jan 11, 2010 10:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it's that bad

Sustained sub-.500 seasons would be a cause for thinking about replacing him, but I think it would have to be for more than 1-2 seasons (and if it happens, I see KF stepping down first before it became an issue). Let’s not overlook the fact that even during the worst of it, 2007, Iowa was still mostly competitive against teams. During the lean years of the early 90s, the same couldn’t really be said of Fry’s team (no knock meant on Hayden, I love that man to death).

Where was the theme music for this episode?
