BLACK HEART GOLD PODCAST, EPISODE 7: HASTY MAKES WASTY

Not Mark Hasty, but this never gets old.

The good news?  It's Arkansas State week, which provides a brief respite from the never-ending week-to-week psychological beatdown that is the typical Big Ten conference football season.  The bad news?  Despite my calls for a new Sun Belt blog called SUNspenders, nobody knows anything about Arkansas State.

No one, that is, but Mark Hasty.  For those of you new to Blogfrica, Mark was blogging about Iowa and the BXI before "blogging," as we now know it, existed (as he says in the interview, he started writing "Pickin' on the Big Ten" back when Usenet was popular).  He was the creator and editor of The Bemusement Park, and is now a regular contributor over at Fanhouse, where "Pickin'" goes public every Thursday.  We talk about the season to date, what little we know about the Red Wolves, and how it feels to support Iowa State.

Predictions

I agree. At this point, Wisconsin concerns me quite a bit, and I too would not be shocked if someone snuck up on the Hawks at home (jNWU or…. Minnesota?).

I still say we beat OSU though.

9-3 was my pre-season prediction, but now that MSU has regressed/morphed into MSU, I think 10-2 is maybe more reasonable.

However...

As Hasty just said, the UNI game could prove to be VERY beneficial as far as getting “surprised” by anyone goes…

Agreed

I equate our near loss to UNI this season to the debacle in the second half of the 2002 Iowa State game. Both teams reacted quite well to the adversity from those games. That said, it is far too early to declare this team is headed to Pasedena. If we were 4-0 right now, and had blown out UNI, I would be far more worried about this week’s game, and/or the Michigan State game.

At this point, I worry about Northwestern and Wisconsin. If we escape those two games unscathed, there’s a good shot that tOSU falls at home.

They took the bar, the whole damn bar!

i hope iowa wins the big ten conference outright.

it would be a nice change. it seems ohio state and penn state have been winning the title in the last five years or more. plus iowa is an excellent bowl team and could make the big ten proud with a bcs win. ohio state has fallen flat at least the last three years in bcs bowls. ohio state is always over-rated in my opinion. i like and respect joe paterno too much to say anything but positive things for his program. your team just has their number. here is to a great season and hopefully 12 wins. i still remember that game with lsu where drew tate threw the bomb and it was caught for the winning td. i like your coach alot to. have a great season and that was a good win over penn state.

You guys are actually getting *good* at this podcast thing.

And you told me it would end up being like “The Chris Farley Show.” So disappointing.

Just wait until you hear the part after the opening song.

Before you respond, let me remind you: Brian Cook called me smug, which makes me the Obama of smugness. I'm basically Smugbama.

Did you know...

That Mark Hasty used to be Pastor Mark Hasty, at the church I go to.
