The only team more retarded than the Cubs...

is apparently the Milwaukee Brewers.

Cubs and Brewers were tied 1-1 in the top of the 9th at Wrigley.  Milton Bradley drops an easy popup, and Kevin Gregg hits Craig Counsell with a pitch (no, it did not hit him, but the ump said it did.)  Up comes Ryan Braun, with two men on. Braun is hitting .328 with 58 RBI this year.  Of course, he pops out to the shortstop.

Of course, in the bottom of the 9th, the Cubs get two runners on base with only one out, only for Fontenot to make sure he gets doubled off at second for the double play.

In the top of the 10th, Prince Fielder makes sure to start off the inning right by striking out looking.  Two more outs and the Cubs get their chance.

Bottom of the 10th, Soriano grounds out.  Theriot gets an infield single.  Wild pitch by DiFelice of the Brewers puts Theriot on second.  D Lee flies out, but Theriot tags up and gets to third.  Intentional walks of Bradley and Soto to load the bases with two outs.  DiFelice walks Jake Fox to lose the game.

I'm not sure I've ever seen two teams try to give each other a game more than this clusterf***.  Then again, I've watched enough Cubs baseball that maybe I have.

Man I hate the Cubs, those white W flags, and all the idiots singing with Steve Goodman's corpse for a half hour after every win that is given to them by even dumber teams.

Cubs gave up a walk off walk last season

Pretty sure it was Marmol that did it.

That's big talk for a little guy,
but I'm walkin' without reply.

At least Marmol is putting forth the effort.

Kevin Gregg has got to be the worst closer in the league. No less than 4 times have I watched him blow a game that wouldn’t even be considered a save anyway. He’s fucking worthless.

I love Marmol

especially that slider, but his control can disappear at any moment, to return at an unknown date.

Kevin Gregg pitched 2 scoreless innings yesterday

and pitched around the error by Bradley. He isn’t doing any worse than the guy he replaced.

On the other hand, Marmol hasn’t been able to find the plate with any consistency this season.

I apologize for the harshness.

I was a bit drunk last night. It just seems like every time I watch Gregg pitch something terrible happens. Marmol’s inconsistency is definitely a problem, but the Cubs’ bullpen in general has been awful. When the offense can’t score and the bullpen cannot hold, it makes for an incredibly disappointing year.

I don’t give a shit about baseball, but still, walk off walk???

what is it, or how the hell does a pitcher walk in the winning run?

@shake n bake

A walk-off walk is like a walk-off home run. Because the play wins the game, and the players “walk off” the field after its over.

The bases were loaded when the last walk came, and so, every runner advances, and a run scored to win the game for the Cubs. (or, more appropriately, lose the game for the Brewers.)

I know what it is, I just can’t believe the pitcher was incompetent enough to pull it off.

And the worst thing is...

both teams looked so inept on Friday, and then played two un-competitive games on Saturday (11-2 Brewers) and Sunday (8-2 Cubs).

Oh well, it’s not like both teams are in contention for a division or the wild card. ; )

I feel like the NL East and NL Central

will be won by whichever teams are least incompetent. There’s a crap-ton of flawed teams battling it out for two division titles there.

by RossWB on Jul 5, 2009 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

The only teams approaching “inconsistently good” in those divisions that I see are Philly and St.Louis, and I have some questions about even those teams (starting pitching).

Unfortunately, one of these other crappy teams will probably win the wild card: Florida, San Fran, Chicago, Milwaukee.

The Phils just need to do whatever they can to avoid getting home field

They’re money on the road, but dreadful at home (although they did sweep the Mets at home this weekend, so maybe they’re coming around at home).

by RossWB on Jul 6, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Phillies are...

16 and 22 at home.
26 and 15 on the road.

I heard John Kruk today saying that they need to get another pitcher (maybe Pedro Martinez). He is right. They do not have one starter with an ERA under 4.6, and Lidge (closer) has an ERA over 7. Sad thing is, I don’t really think Pedro is going to be the answer.

Moyer is 7-6, and Blanton is 5-4. No other normal starter has a record over .500 (Hamels, I’m looking at you.)

Have the Philly fans been booing their own world champion team at home so much that they don’t perform well?

I'd put my money

on the Giants. With Cain and Lincecum, they could do some damage in the playoffs if they get in.

by TarHeelHawk on Jul 6, 2009 9:05 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Giants

Those two pitchers look good. But, right now, the Giants have two guys hitting .300 (I have heard of neither of them.) They also have two dudes who have hit 10 or more home runs, and one of them is a Molina. I know they play in a pitchers’ park, but I have a feeling they will need to hit better to be dangerous in the playoffs.

I say this as an Oakland A’s and a Minnesota Twins fan. I fully admit that any team except the Nationals would probably take a 3 game set against my A’s.

I saw Cain

throw a complete game 2 hitter against the Cubs during his rookie year in 2005. That kid is money, although he hasn’t really shown it over the last 2 seasons. One hit was a homer by Lee, the other was a single leading off the 9th inning.

by TarHeelHawk on Jul 6, 2009 10:44 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, Cain is good.

He has given up 31 runs (only 1 unearned) in 16 starts. Very good. He is 9-2 this year, and his ERA is under 2.5.

On the other hand, the Giants have scored 2 runs or fewer in 29 of 81 games this year.
They have scored 4 runs or fewer in 48 of 81 games. I looked at the NL playoff scores from the last couple years, and the average winning NLDS playoff team can put up 5 runs in a game. That tells me that the Giants’ offense needs to step it up.

The Reds got throughly shitstomped today

22-1, starter gave up 9 ER in the 2/3rds of an inning he lasted.

Go Cubbies, they suck less than the alternatives.

Reds pitcher...

was Jonny Cueto. Tonight, in the first inning, he gave up 2 HR and 2 doubles, and that was on 3 hits, a hit batter, and 5 hits. 5 of the runs (of Cueto’s) were with 2 outs already.

I actually saw Cueto live last year, in Cincy versus the Astros on August 8 (after Cincy traded Griffey away). Cueto gave up two solo HR in the first inning, but also struck 3 guys out. He settled down, and in 5 innings he struck out 9 and only gave up 3 earned runs total that night (4 actual runs). He left the game with a 4-3 lead.

Tonight sounds like maybe Cueto just started throwing his heat (he can get up to 93 or 95 MPH pretty easy, but has just an OK slider and an OK changeup to go with it), and ended up with a nightmare of a first inning.

Cueto may have sucked tonight, but I’d say I’d rather have him than about half the Cubs staff (Dempster, Wells, maybe Harden this year) most nights.

by WaterlooChazz on Jul 6, 2009 11:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I would agree with you about Harden

as he has been terrible this year, but Dempster was the victim of poor run support the entire month of June, and so was Wells.

You could say very easily at this point in the year that Wells and/or Lilly has been the best pitcher on the staff.

by TarHeelHawk on Jul 7, 2009 7:56 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

You may be right,

I have thought Lilly has been a bit underrated for a few years now, even though his stats aren’t always great.

I only looked at Wells’s record (4-3 in 11 starts), but his ERA is good (2.48). I have not seen him pitch even on TV, so I’ll bow to your assessment of him.

It is difficult for me to like Dempster. He is 5-5 with an ERA over 4. You could be right about his lack of run support, and for all I know, he may be a nice guy and likeable teammate. But he looks like an absolute tool. I have a friend who refers to him as the “Dumpster.” Before last years All-Star worthy explosion of 17 wins, he had gone 5 years without winning more than 5 games per year (yes, I know he had injuries or was a reliever at times). I guess I’m just saying it is difficult for me to think of Ryan Dempster in positive terms because I am not a Marlin’s fan from (Conan O’Brien voice) “the year 2000.”

by WaterlooChazz on Jul 7, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

One more reason...

I don’t like Dempster:

I like the picture on the top of this story, with a kid pointing and laughing at Dempster.
