Roy Marble Commits to Iowa. This Is Not a Repeat From 25 Years Ago
Woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo: According to both HawkeyeReport.com and HawkeyeNation.com, Roy Marble Jr. has committed to Iowa. Marble Jr., son of Iowa’s all-time leading scorer Roy Marble, is the second 2010 commitment. Ben Brust of Mundelein, Ill., committed to Iowa on Wednesday.
With this, as with everything, we have Duez Henderson to thank the most.
So, uh... yeah. Is Iowa slowly becoming relevant in basketball again? Holy hell.

Let's save the "relevance" comments for....
when Iowa basketball does something mildly good again. Like going .500 in Big Ten play, or beating a decent non-conference opponent.
Or when Jarryd Cole scores 15 points in one game.
Or when Devan Bawinkel dunks on a hoop that is at least 9’ 6"
Or when Anthony Tucker passes a full semester of classes.

All the signings are great. ONLY if Lickliter...
- doesn’t freak all the returning players out in the fall with his mystical, enigmatic rotations whereby a player gets 24 points and 7 rebounds in 34 mins of play (see D. Palmer), then sits the next game.
- realizes that Iowa cannot compete in the Big 10 without copious fan support…and no one is going to go near Carver unless this team plays games at an average closer to 70 points per game (last year Iowa averaged 0.1 points per game more than Indiana which was good for 10th in the Big 10).
- accepts that a team with no player over 6’ 7" cannot defend its way to a winning record. Iowa did not have one player on the all-defensive team. Let’s get real, Lickliter is recruiting offensive players who are good three point shooters and asking them to focus on defense and half court play. It makes no sense.
- quits calling out players for losses. It isn’t the 1950s Todd…the generation of players you are coaching are, like it or not, generationally different. You need to motivate them with positive reinforcement and clear direction, rather than lamenting that they are not of your generation and willing to do whatever you ask without question. (You NEVER hear Ferentz say Iowa lost because DJK didn’t block on a critical off tackle play in the fourth quarter.)
- (speaking of bad communication) communicates better with the media about what the fuck is going on. The Tucker situation last year was crazy. NO ONE understood why he wasn’t playing until the report of his mono WELL AFTER the coach knew, the players knew and, for that matter, anyone close to the team knew. The health of the team is not a state’s secret to protect at all costs.
- can find a way to win a Big 10 ROAD GAME every once in a while…that is the difference between good coaching and mediocre coaching. Iowa has the worst road record in the time Lickliter has coached at Iowa. Our only non Carver victory last year was vs. Kansas Sate in Las Vegas.
