Iowa Pro Day

[Bumped.--OPS]

http://scottdo.wordpress.com/2009/03/23/greene-wows-nfl-scouts-at-pro-day/

Looks like Shonn Greene improved nearly every aspect of his workout from the combine.  Shaved off a few ticks from his 40 time, increased his bench reps, jumped a little bit higher, and wowed about every scout there. Great interview by him as well.

He says it best: “If you look at the stats and all that, it will tell you that I’m the top back. You look at some of those guys that I went head-to-head with and some of them I faced the same defense, and I did much better. I’m not worried about that. Whoever takes me is going to get a good running back."

I can't wait to watch this guy on the field next year. [Except if it's Cincinnati. Then the appropriate emotion is pity.--OPS]

Good for him

I was one of the few people here who thought his combine performance hurt him quite a bit, so hopefully this gets him back up into the 2nd round range. Most of the other backs have been fairly underwhelming at their pro days as well, but I’m still not sure Shonn is going to overtake Wells, Moreno, and McCoy. This should put him right back in the discussion for fourth best back in the draft with Donald Brown though. With his 40 time, it worth noting that his Pro Day times are hand-timed while the combine is electronically and thus significantly more accurate. Still, the fact that everyone there had him in the 4.5s is a good sign, as is his improvement in all those other areas, and his performance in the drills.

Does anyone have the results for the other guys at Iowa’s Pro Day? I’ve been looking all over but can’t find anything.

NFL.com has an update now

Results from Iowa Pro Day

Looks like everyone had a really solid showing. It’s really a shame that a couple inches of height is probably the only thing keeping King from being drafted in the first few rounds.

It’s also crazy to see how many guys have had their draft potential skyrocket over the past year. A year ago, I wondered if this year might end Iowa’s long-running streak of having a guy taken in the NFL draft. Back then Bruggeman was an unknown quantity, it was no sure thing that Greene would be back (or that he would be remotely as amazing as he was), and Fletcher was best known for being rather inconsistent (to be charitable). The best prospects seemed like Olsen and King and they seemed like late-round guys at best. What a difference a year makes…

Thanks

That’s a really good day for Fletcher, I could see him sneaking into the 3rd or 4th round. I’m with you, if someone had told me that I’d be calling Fletcher a potential 3rd rounder a year ago I’d have said they were crazy. He really improved in his senior year, and is a great combination of size and speed.

I have no idea where King will go. His size screams 7th rounder, but I think someone is going to fall in love with the effort and technique. He’s a really nice fit for a Tampa-2 team.

I think Fletcher made the biggest senior year jump since Razor Ramon Ochoa

Both guys who folks had no expectations for who wound up being very, very productive for the Hawks — and it seems like Fletcher’s story may even have a happier ending since it could lead to spot in the NFL. I remember Fletch getting burned to a crisp in a few games in 07 when he stepped in for Shada, but he was solid as a rock in 08.

And, yeah, King’s draft success seems to hinge on him being able to convince some team that he would be a great fit for them, size be damned.

Agreed

Fletch really has come through big this year, both during the season and the whole pre-draft process. Many people thought he was the best CB at the Shrine Game, and from what I saw, he looked pretty solid during the combine. Glad to see the guy moving up the boards.

And I’m a little surprised Brandon Myers hasn’t gotten more love. I know he isn’t the flashiest TE in the world, but he was a solid blocker and a 1st down machine for us last year. I hope he makes it into somebody’s camp.

It's all in the reflexes...

I really want King in Indy

he’d actually be bigger than the two guys that played undertackle for them last year.

Moreno was slow at his pro day just like at the combine

Wells can’t help himself with workouts since his issues are injuries and that he can’t block or catch.

McCoy ran between 4.48-4.53 and was barely able to get his weight back over 200 (he got the flu, lost a bunch of weight and didn’t run at the combine) so he didn’t really help himself.

Donald Brown’s pro day is tomorrow.

I think Greene got himself back up in there. The workout showed he’s more athletic than he looked at the combine and early in the year and that he’s busting his ass to get better.

I still prefer Rashad Jennings in the 2nd or Andre Brown in the 3rd-4th for Indy over all the above though.

I didn't say Wells, Moreno, and McCoy helped themselves drammatically

I just think they were already above Greene pretty much regardless of what they did (due to age, hype, more starting experience, and, in the case of the latter two, more versatility), and that this didn’t change that. It helped his stock, but I think he’s still the the number 4 back in the draft at best (please note that I’m not saying that I think that those guys are any better than him, just that he’ll be the fourth one taken).

I still don't understand

why McCoy is so highly rated. I can understand that Moreno and Wells will go first round, but I didn’t see anything all season from McCoy to justify his being one of the top five backs.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

I'm not sure what more he had to do to impress you

2,816 yards rushing and 35 TDs the last two years at 4.8 per carry, combined with decent receiving numbers, all while carrying an awful Pitt offense on his back. He had a really good college career, and he’s actually my favorite pro prospect of the bunch.

Since we had so much fun with Darren Davis' Wonderlic score

here’s a more timely pre-draft fail.

Andre Smith running the 40 at his Pro Day.
