Ferentz contract extension
In light of recent evidence suggesting actual analysis on BHGP, I expect HS or OPS will dig into this, filing a freedom of information act request with the UI, and determine what the buyout terms are, if any. Wait, KF negotiated with Barta. Barta probably thinks a buyout means the school has to pay the coach a lump sum when said coach jumps to the nfl after his youngest son graduates. Still and all, this is good news. Although our school has demonstrated a willingness (thanks Bowlsby) to pay many pesos more than it's status in major college football suggests, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone else I want coaching that would actually be willing to come to Iowa City.

Shonn Greene needs some of that loot
Time to party like it is 2002-04? or just expect a Alamo or maybe an Outback Bowl every 3rd or 4th year, with a losing season thrown in? What are the real expectations of our top 10 ten paid coach? I give up on my own.
What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.
Oh FFS
You think Ferentz—the guy who recruited Greene three times, gave him the starting nod and made him the feature back of the offense for as long as Greene’s legs would hold up, deserves credit too? Jesus, you’re insufferable.

This is a great investment for the future of our program. This makes him a college coach for AT LEAST the next 4-5 years right? It isn’t worth jumping to a shorter term NFL deal that wouldn’t be worth much more per year…and you have to think there is a significant buyout cost that may make it even more unlikely he’ll jump before 2015 then. 2015? I’ll be like 80 taking my grandkids to games by then! Awesome.
If he used the KC job and his buddy Pioli to leverage an extension…well played Captain Kirk.
With this taken care of, shiny new turf in Kinnick ( with Pink Visitor’s Sideline DAMMIT! ) and Wegher and the boys coming in I am very excited for the next several seasons of Hawkeye Football.
Go Hawks!
I'm all about using the KC job as leverage...
Even though this wasn’t evident (which wouldn’t be KF’s style anyway), I can guarantee that this went on to some degree.
That KC job offered a helluva lot more oppurtunities then the JAX job did a few years back….

Kirk Ferentz is worth more to the University of Iowa
than he recieves. As we are witnessing with Iowa basketball…in terms of fan interest, nothing is guaranteed at Iowa. Yet, Iowa football is doing very well in attendance, it provides THE MOST visibilty for the university as a whole. Football at iowa is a liscence to print money.
Look, I know some everyday folk are outraged by his salary, but if he were the worst paid coach in the Big 10 he would be paid like Indiana coach Bill Lynch, who is paid a little less than $300K . But look at what that gets your program: Indiana averages 33,000 per game attendance. Iowa averages71,000. At an average of $33 per ticket that is a difference in revenue of $1.2 million PER HOME GAME and Iowa played seven this year (or $8.4 mil in revenue). Then there is the revenue of the Bowl Games, television exposure that boost enrollments and even helps with grant money, yada, yada, yada.
This is a great business decision…the guy delivers huge to Iowa—the second smallest school in the Big 10—with 10,000 fewer students than Indiana.

I have no problem with what Ferentz makes – he’s worth it to the school. My recollection was the big bump was somewhat of a parting gift from Bowlsby on his way out the door. Wrong?
Actually I think Bowlsby is a believer of continuity
He saw Ferentz as the perfect fit and wanted to lock him down big time. The cost of losing a coach is pretty high—as high if not higher than firing aa coach. First off, if you lose a coach it often is because he is successful. So loss of continuity to the whole progam is costly. Second, once you replace a coach there is often a loss in recruiting…for at least one year, and as many as three. Then the loss of a coach affects current players, some will transfer. Then the loss of a coach means a change in system, and that has financial as well as time costs. For example, a new coach may affect hiring all accross the football operation. There are severance costs, search costs, etc. We are not just talking assistant coaches, who have contracts too that must be honored.
I have a friend who works at Microsoft in the HR department. He told me that an employee who is at the $100K salary level costs as much as $300K to hire train and replace. In other words, the cost of hiring the right person has costs associated with it, then people must take time away from thier work to help in training, ensuring that the employee can become fully operational, then to lose that employee have costs associated with retarting the process all over again.
If you have a good coach, who provides acceptable results, and has a vision and a plan that you believe in, that the fans support (read buy tickets), then you have a home run. You pay whatever is needed to LOCK that person down.
You can expect that Iowa State will be reeling for at least three to five more years. If you include the past two to three years then you have nearly a decade of LOSSES in every conceivable way. Loss of fan support, loss of good athletes, losses on the scoreboard, loss of confidence….you name it. I would bet that Iowas State over the past 7-10 years has paid more dearly for their three coaches, twofold, than Iowa has with Ferentz, desipte the heft of his contract. Ferentz is worth that much.
