G-Tech's offense

We know Iowa plays stay-at-home disciplined defense that is theoretically custom-made to eat up an old school option attack like G-Tech runs. However, Ferentz made a good point in his presser- how do you simulate an offense like that in practice? What I mean is, is Iowa's scout QB an option QB? Is there anybody on Iowa's scout team that will really be able to do anything resembling what G-Tech will present to Iowa? I'm kind of worried Iowa will be used defending against a fumbling, inept version of what G-Tech runs, then they will come to the bowl game and G-Tech will run what Iowa has been practicing against but 10X faster and more fluidly. It could be like sparring with a 3rd rate flyweight and then getting to the ring and fighting the heavyweight champion of the world.

Iowa will not siimulate their offense

as much as practice being disciplined against it. You cannot simulate anyone who has a great offense very well. But, the defense we will run will likely be a lot of 3-4, rotating linemen in and using all our LBS and safeties. The key to us winning will be our corners…they will be on an island, a lot. Cato will play more in this game, I am betting, than any this year.

Our offense needs to come as close as possible to matching thier time of possession. We can win this game…of course we can.

Does it matter if they can simulate speed

Given a month to prepare for this game, I think KF will have the D ready to shut down the option. The Hawks have the speed to get to the end and stop them. Maybe I"m homer but I see the Hawks winning another close one after Stanzi throws a pick 6 on the first possesion. If he doesn’t, then the hawks may win easily.

The trick to defeating GT's offense

Is having the time to prepare for it. As SMA notes above, it’s not about simulating the speed/effectiveness, but each defensive lineman being well-versed on his assignments. The triple-option that Tech runs is unique and very hard to gameplan for, if you only have a week to do so. When you have a month-plus to get ready for it, Tech’s limited offensive playbook (don’t expect them to pass more than 10 times all game) can be beaten (see a mediocre LSU team from last year).

By which I mean McNutt with Cheese can be the practice QB.

Oh, and Matt Roth said my math was correct, right before giving me the three (actually only two)finger salute.

The key to defeating GT's offense

is the same as defeating any offense. Win the line of scrimmage.

That and

tackling would’t hurt.
