That must mean it’s 1995 again, which means I have HS eligibility. Time to go be a White Speed Right Tackle.

The carnage

For the few and proud that wanted to know how the drinking game ended: 4 entered, 2 left. Highlights: I got slapped twice, countless beer duels happened, and I am now heading to the bar in Chicago. Oh, and three cases were consumed by the group. Enjoy the “Perfect Storm” that took place this evening. Iowa might be headed to Glendale.

If you count the Houston game today...

Cleveland had 14 TDs and 1100+ receiving yards this year on 101 receptions. I know Houston is a “chuck-it” school, but those are still impressive numbers. And I think he still has a year left at Houston (as does Keenum), if they don’t go to the NFL.

Question about Cap One Bowl

Are they really, as they claim, going to announce their selection 2 hours before the BCS selection show? Is that possible? Cause that’s what they’re claiming. Which would totally undermine the BCS selection of Iowa/PSU

'They are who we thought they were!'

by twsmith23 on Dec 5, 2009 9:09 PM CST reply actions

But they don’t do the show until after NFL football.

Maybe

Morehouse speculated that they would announce it as “Iowa/PSU” and leave it open, but that would also imply that someone got a BCS bid.

10 seconds left in first half of Div II semi between Northwest Missouri and Cal (Pa.). Cal kneels on third down, Northwest calls their last time out. by StoopsMyAss on Dec 5, 2009 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

I think a TCU-Boise matchup...

would be disappointingly unimpressive. I think TCU’s defense is good enough to stymie Boise’s offense (and by stymie, I mean limit to 21 to 28 points). I’m not sure if TCU will keep scoring as much as they have after the layoff, so maybe they get 28 to 35 points instead of their standard 40.

Yeah, it would still be a “good” game. But don’t expect a Boise barn-burner like against Oklahoma. And I’m not sure if there would be a giant following, what with 3 other undefeated teams still out there going into the bowls. Also, when Boise met TCU in last year’s bowl (Poinsettia?) it was a 17-16 TCU win (only 2 turnovers for each team, although TCU had 470 total yards compared to Boise’s 250) . Not exactly a shootout.

TCU and Boise each play BCS teams and beat them or be very competitive (obviously, I would want Iowa to beat whoever we play).

Maybe like this:

National Title game: Bama v. Texas, reluctantly I will root for McCoy to win and Mack Brown to get smothered by Bevo.

Rose Bowl: Ohio St v. Oregon, sorry Big Ten fans, I have to root for Oregon to win a 6-3 stinker.

Sugar Bowl: Florida v. TCU, go Frogs.

Orange Bowl: Cincy v. G Tech, I don’t have much against Cincy, and Gilyard is awesome, but I like Paul Johnson, so maybe I root for Tech.

Fiesta Bowl: Iowa beats Boise in a close, high-scoring thriller, but Clayborn, Spievey and Sash each get some big plays.

by WaterlooChazz on Dec 6, 2009 12:04 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not saying he'll actually win it

I’m saying he should. Stats are an awful way to judge a DT. He totally dominates every team he plays, and often draws double and triple teams that have allowed Crick to also have a really good year. He just completely destroyed a good Texas offense (and got his sack total up to 10.5, and his tackle numbers over 80. He also has an insane number of pass breakups for a DT. So, his stats are pretty good too).

Ingram actually will win it after today, but Suh is definitely the best player in the country, and I don’t think there’s anyone else who’s even all that close.

by NorseHawk on Dec 6, 2009 12:07 AM CST up reply actions

You don't think Gerhart is close?

Does Stanford even win 3 games without him?

Also, today, I would say Marty Gilyard is a damn good player. I haven’t looked at his stats, but he is the man.

It's not "most valuable" it's "most outstanding"

So I kinda don’t care how many Stanford would win without him. Although, for the record, they have a pretty good passing game too. Luck is a good QB.

Anyway, no, I don’t think Gerhart is close. I don’t think he’s even better than Ingram.

Iowa v. TCU in Fiesta

I want to say Boise/TCU in Fiesta so BCS could say “Look, we’re letting the mid-majors play!”, but someone pointed out it would be a re-match, and someone else pointed out TCU doesn’t sell tix, so that means more tix for Iowans.

BSU and TCU should play each other in a playoff. I do not think two mid majors deserve at large spots. let the winner of that game fill the 4th remaining at large. If this were pre-BCS

Then neither Boise nor TCU would even smell a BCS bowl. As flawed as the system is, and as much as the little guys tend to get shut out, the simple truth is that teams like BSU/TCU/UTAH have absolutely NOTHING to bitch about, as before they had no chance of being in a major bowl. Besides, BYU managed to win a title without being in a major bowl.

Fiesta with 2nd pick (replacement) takes TCU
Orange with 3rd pick (at-large) takes Iowa
Fiesta with 4th pick (at-large) takes Cinncy
Sugar with 5th pick (at-large) takes Boise St.

Fiesta gets #3 and #4 teams and they are more legit than Boise—besides Boise played TCY last year and no one came. Boise Florida is intriguing until they get destroyed by halftime. Iowa plays Ga. Tech in a who cares game, which of course I care about. Ga Tech may not sell a lot of tics so they will jump at Iowa. Penn State cannot save the ratings for that game.

Well, going into today

I think everyone was expecting Iowa-Boise. Lots of things changed yesterday. And, after yesterday, I think the TCU-advocates may have a voice. A TCU-Bama championship may be more justifiable than the Texas alternate. Texas is benefitting from being a pre-season top 3 team, and, in my opinion, has not shown enough to warrant being ranked ahead of TCU. This year, it may be fair to say that the MWC is equal to, or better than, the Big XII. Of course, I could be completely full of shit.

by The Mexican't on Dec 6, 2009 11:03 AM CST up reply actions

I don't see this

Are Clemson and BYU really more impressive wins than OkSt and Nebraska? They might be comparable, but not a big lead. Factor in the part of TCU’s schedule that was complete ass (the bottom teams of the MWC are ten times worse than the bottom of the Big XII) and I don’t think TCU really has an argument to be ahead.

FWIW, Colley (prior to yesterday) had Texas’s SOS at 54 and TCU’s at 95, with the Big XII ranking 5th among conferences and the MWC 7th. (The Big East actually ranks second, somehow, but Cincy’s SOS was 76. Probably jumps up after playing Pitt, though a little fiddling around on his website indicates that the top 7 in his rankings will likely be Bama, Texas, Cincy, Florida, TCU, Oregon, and Boise – and that’s without adding the GT-Clemson game that will hurt TCU’s SOS.)

against…ta da….TCU. There were 33K there. 40K under capacity. Unemployment in Boise is out of control and they have about 60K to draw from outside of students. Not happening.

Dude,

Do you just pull your cheeks apart and push air? 60k to draw from outside of students? There is roughly 500,000 plus people in the Boise metro area. School is 20,000. And Boise gets very good ratings on TV, which is why they had 7 games televised this year. Your comment on Boise’s unemployment is way off base as well. Micron has had to make cuts and they are one of the largest employers in the city, but overall Boise has done very well through the past year. I mean, do you just make stuff up?

I think

Cincy has a stronger draw this year. they have gotten an off season and a full year to develop a band wagon. they didn’t fluke their way into a BCS. Yes they won a joke of an automatic but at least they’re undefeated. The 12-0 factor will allow them to sell more tickets. I don’t know how fans packed Nipple Stadium but I do believe the incentive of a big bowl will bring people even though it didn’t last year. Also, who wouldn’t want to leave ohio in the winter

by Pain in the Sash on Dec 6, 2009 12:53 AM CST up reply actions

head to head Cinncy and Boise

Cinncy is a safer pick this year. Maybe not in general, but this year. more TV and more convincing as an undefeated.

I think Cincy...

is the hotter team right now, and probably a better team than Boise right now.

However, Cincy did not sell out their first two games this year (against SEMO and Fresno State). And their stadium holds roughly 35k, so I’m not sure they will have a giant following.

I would guess they might go before Boise, but maybe not anyone else.

TCU sold out one game ALL year

and they have a 40K stadium. the bowl peeps are going to get stuck with these teams…so I epxect them to balance them out with Iowa, Florida, etc…not put them in same game.

Does anyone outside this thread believe that Iowa is going to the BCS?

Or is it all biased speculation and dreaming on our part. Yeah, I think it would be a travesty if PSU jumps us, but I didn’t hear anyone on TV talking about us being in the BCS. I have heard people talking about us in the Cap One Bowl.

by shada's revenge on Dec 6, 2009 12:46 AM CST up reply actions

I think we are a lock

until we aren’t…I think Fiesta wants us and I think the news story of tomorrow is how BOise went last in the bowl picks. Cinncy has some cache now that tey are undefeated. The only Bowl they cannot go to is the Orange…that is a death sentence for Miami.

Mark May had us in (which of course doesn't mean shit).

Holtz didn’t. Rece Davis did.

Brad Edwards, ESPN’s BCS guru, had us in as well. He’s actually fairly knowledgeable about this shit, unlike the TV folks.

but okay…we’d have our hands full. They are a tough match-up. But Ga. showed the way.

We've got a fast enough defense...

…we might be able to shut down the triple option (or whatever). Do they run up the middle a lot? That might worry me a little, but we could send Spievey in to gobble up runners in the backfield.

College Football Final on ESPN

Mark May thinks we will be in the Orange versus Georgia Tech.

Rece Davis thinks we will be in the Fiesta versus Boise.

Lou Holth thinkth we will not be in a BCSth Bowl.

Which is weird...

because Holtz got his master’s degree at Iowa.

I actually kind of think fondly of Holtz, even if he is a stumbling moron now. I have a friend who thinks Holtz was a dirty sleeze as a coach, and calls him the “Teflon Leprechaun” because he always left programs just before they were caught breaking the rules.

I think you have to be

You have to believe that your way of deal with players, fans, and the media is the right way. You have to believe that you know what is best for a team. You can’t be doubtful of yourself or show anyone that you are second guessing yourself or not confident. Grrr… I can’t find the words to say what I mean.

Yeah...they played poorly tonight

but I think they will give Bama a game. This game, for Bama, was the Super Bowl of games…it was just last year they lost to Utah in bowl. and they were not impressivve against Auburn…

As much as I hate $aban

He has his team playing ANGRY, and they will want to come out to play in the MNC game.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Dec 6, 2009 1:26 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah.

But they will need to refill their motivational tanks. Everything I’ve heard/read says that they really did focus EVERYTHING they did since last year’s game on winning this year’s game. That level of motivation and determination won’t just replenish overnight, although obviously the crystal football can be a pretty big motivator. And it’s not like they’ll even need to play as well as they did today if Texas looks as shitty as they did tonight.

What a bad day for Buckeye basketballers: Even Turner breaks his back and is out for 8 weeks, and Oden is done for the year with a broken patella.

Yeah, that sucks

As much as I dislike OSU, Turner was on pace to be a serious national player of the year contender and top 5 draft pick. It’s really shitty to see him go down like that, hopefully he can come back 100%

Hawai’i is almost as big an embarrassment on the field tonight as their coach is off it.

Oh

The Schadenfreude that surrounded yesterday. As much as I hate to see how that game ended last night, I am glad that Texas walked away the winner (I would’ve been devastated if we didn’t have a shot at an At-Large berth).

They took the bar, the whole fucking bar!
