Fiesta Bowl Insider Info?

Admittedly you should take this for what it's worth, but just got off the phone with a close friend of mine who knows someone who works at U. of Phoenix Stadium here in AZ (where the Fiesta Bowl will be played). Supposedly Iowa vs. Boise St. is a done deal, they have the invites (or whatever the proper procedure is) all signed and sealed, just waiting for Sunday to deliver.

I know it's stupid to believe 'I know a guy who heard from a guy who talked to someone', but every piece of information I hear down here alludes to Iowa vs. Boise St, from stadium people to airport people to radio people. Look me up for a drink when you're all in town... =)

Can't be a done deal

For one, Texas has to beat Nebraska or they WILL be hosting Nebraska. Second, they have to be reasonably sure that the Orange Bowl isn’t going to take one of the teams they want (although that’s believable if they take Iowa as their replacement pick – the Orange is probably more interested in TCU).

by SpartanDan on Dec 2, 2009 6:31 PM CST reply actions

Well, I would also assume

It depends on the UT-NU game this weekend. BUT, other than that it’s done from what i hear. As for the Orange – I would assume there would be some talking amongst the bowls themselves to see who wants who, who will take who, etc.

Again, i never like to believe these things before it’s done, but i was posting it for what it’s worth…

If Texas wins...

I would assume the Fiesta will take a Big Ten team first, but if Clemson wins the ACC championship game, you can pencil in Boise State to Miami. No way the Orange Bowl wants a Clemson vs TCU repeat. That game sucked the first time and it wasn’t even on national TV. And unless Pitt beats Cincy, they wont want the big east champ there for the 2nd year in a row. Either way, Boise State is going to face an inferior opponent and be favored by at least a TD. No offense Hawkeyes… but your team just isn’t really that good. Nice fan base though.

no

I am just saying what I think about the matchups. I’ve watched Iowa several times this year and I’m not impressed. I usually find myself cheering for them to win because they are blue collar and tough, I just don’t think the team is that good this year. Sorry if you are offended.

don't play the struggled game

LSU struggled in Baton Rouge against La Tech. I won’t even start naming the teams that gave Iowa very hard time. It will embarrass you for mentioning La Tech. Anyway, your team has a good defense so It should keep it close against the Broncos. Vegas will give you 7 points though. I’m not saying it won’t be close because I know Boise State is far from perfect.

by Finloopio on Dec 3, 2009 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

We also struggled a lot

We just beat more than one good team to make up for it.

by NorseHawk on Dec 3, 2009 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

Interesting to me.

The interesting thing is that Boise State has the best quality win in the country. I don’t think anything like this has ever happened where a team plays such a horrible schedule (I admit it) but in that schedule has the best win of any other team in the country. I say best win because Oregon is the highest non-undefeated team and beat several quality opponents along the way. Your win over Penn State is solid, but Penn State played a joke of a schedule outside of you guys and Ohio State.

by Finloopio on Dec 3, 2009 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

You'd better pray that Oregon wins the Civil War

They’re already teetering on the precipice of being overrated (that win over USC looks weaker every week) and are only a loss away from being dropped below Top 15.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

by HoyaGoon on Dec 3, 2009 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

Not really worried about Oregon winning

Because we play Oregon State next season and it’d be great to play the rose bowl winner from the previous year. Our series with the Ducks is over.

by Finloopio on Dec 3, 2009 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

Are you really pissing on Penn State's schedule?

I don’t think you want to do that. Penn St. played two teams inside the Top 10 of the BCS Standings. They also played 6 bowl bound teams.

Boise St., on the other hand, plays 5 of the 21 lowest ranked teams in all of college football. That’s over 40% of your schedule…that is occupied by 25% of the worst football teams America has to offer. I would say your schedule might be the easiest schedule in America. So we all understand why you make such a huge deal about the Oregon game and get all puffy about winning that one game.

Your logic is as silly as if you claimed Mark Hamill is one of America’s great actors because, after all, he was in Star Wars. Let’s not get silly about that Oregon game my friend.

Yes

We are talking about the same Boise team that be La Tech by 10 in LA…and the next week LSU beat them by 8 at home.

Your team beat No. Iowa, Arkansas St., Michigan, and Mich. St. by a combined 8 points before losing to Northwestern.

Good point though.

Look...

…it’s so stupid to continue down the path you are on, for one simple reason.
We BEAT Wisconsin, Penn St, Michigan St and took Ohio St to the wire on the road. We know our team is good. Whereas you have to keep playing the “we beat this team who did this over here” game because you don’t play anyone worth bringing up. For all you know, you played one good game and then played mediocre football the rest of the season.
Wait, you beat Oregon, who beat USC, so why aren’t you clamboring to have a bowl game matchup against USC? C’mon, based on the fact that Oregon beat them, you’d mop the floor with USC, right?
But I’ll be happy to have my favorite team shut you up in the Fiesta too.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Dec 4, 2009 12:14 PM CST up reply actions

I see.

It’s OK for Iowa fans to point out that we beat La Tech by 10 away. But when I point out that you guys needed all the luck in the world to beat Ark St. and No. Iowa it’s the wrong path to go down.

Wisconsin is a great team. It took them overtime to beat Fresno at home. We stomped Fresno away. But since you beat them that makes Wisc a great win.

Another fascinating point from hawkeye fans.

Luck?

I know you’re talking out your ass, because if you watched the Ark. St. game (I’m sorry if you did) you’d know that they never came anywhere near beating us. One late pick 6 made the score look close, but at no point did they have a chance to win that game.

Iowa beat No. Iowa by 1 point.

Iowa beat Ark. St. by 3 points.

Orangecircus is what Boise fans are like in my mind.

I think we can understand the underdog/no-respect thing (just in different ways), and I get that Boise is all about style points (not with a negative connotation here). You don’t have highly respected opponents so the team does its damnedest to blow those weaker teams away. It’s the only way you have to show that you’re worthy. You have to crush a Utah State. No one says things like, “Oh, look, BSU beat UC Davis 14-12.”

Thanks

I agree that our programs share some common ground. I would think that it would be frustrating to get put down for having so many ‘lucky’ victories, when really, the W or L should be all that matter at the end of the game. I hope that as we get to know each other better (providing, of course, that we win tomorrow, and the BCS doesn’t do something unforseen) we can achieve some sort of respectful antagonism. I’m afraid it never happened with the Oregon fans, though…

And, no offense (see, I can do it too), but I saw Boise State give up gobs of points to lesser opponents and struggle with middling (or worse) Tulsa and Louisiana Tech teams. It’s not like you’ve been a big blue steamroller all season.

Oregon’s defense is just about awful and BSU scored, what? 19 points or something like it? Iowa’s defense is markedly better, and with a healthy offense…I’m betting Iowa provides a slightly tougher match up than what Oregon does.

Also...

The idea isn’t to get one big win for the season, it’s to win decent-to-big games all season long to prove your team’s mettle. Boise deserves credit for beating Oregon, of course, but to extrapolate that out into assuming that Boise would have gone undefeated against a “real” schedule takes a whole lot of conjecture and faith that frankly have no place in the realm of legitimate championship discussion. I’d certainly argue that an undefeated Bronco team had earned a spot in an 8-team playoff this season—such are the spoils of such a laughable schedule—but I don’t think there’s enough to call Boise legitimate or any other BCS bowl team “inferior.”

Except if it’s Pitt or Nebraska, of course.

Hey Nice BSU fans down here!

I will just say that the Boise/Oklahoma game from a few years back is my favorite non-Iowa bowl that I’ve ever watched. But my feelings are that Boise and Fresno should both join the mountain west then we can add them as a BCS conference with a guaranteed spot every year and a possibility for a second. This would shut up Orrin Hatch as well which would be nice. Boise is a nice program and I do enjoy cheering for them but once they get past their one big game its just harder to watch.

I'm sure you are a nice guy in person

What do you want?

You’ve argued that BSU’s schedule is weak. BSU fans have agreed with you. Isn’t that enough?

You’ve argued that players get hurt in the Big 10. Players get hurt in the WAC, too. You say we would lose more players if we played in an AQ conference. We’ve lost our numbers 1 and 3 WRs, our starting fullback, our co-starting RB, and our middle linebacker to serious season ending injuries (unless our number 1 WR can come back from a fractured lower leg for whatever bowl we play). Is your point that BSU would have suffered even more injuries than that? Unless you have evidence that AQ conferences suffer more injuries than the mid-majors, you can’t expect your argument to be taken serious by anyone who follows a mid-major conference.

You say that BSU fans need to show manners, but it appears that unless we say “yeah, the Broncos would lose to Iowa”, we get chastised. Personally, I doubt BSU would win because of the injuries to key players, but even with the injuries, its not the same team that got utterly demolished by Georgia in 2005.

Finally, 24-29. Twenty-four is the number of Rose Bowls won by USC. Twenty-nine is the number of Rose Bowls won by all the Big 10 teams combined. Big 10 is a good conference — a major conference even — but it’s no USC.

when 5 of your 12 opponents are currently ranked 99th or lower. That means you are playing five games where all you need to do is make sure the bus gets to the game on time. That doesn’t impress folks. I think your coach has the right idea though…you need to catch people’s attention and the trickery and such does just that. But, in a serious conference with NFL capable players, someone would get maimed if you tried that shit week in and week out. I could see you losing players left and right in the Big Ten over the course of a full season.

…you obviously have a team that doesn’t understand what a full season in a major conference is like. Injuries happen… a lot. And it can ruin your season. You wouldn’t know about that (but that’s not your fault, and I hope someday you DO know what it’s like… I’ve always rooted for Boise— cause I love an underdog— and I’d like to see them move up in the world).
By the way… yes, fuck OSU, and no, Penn St fans are excellent fans (they like good football), but anyone can get annoying when they get too used to winning (ahem).

That wasn’t at all what SMA’s point was; it’s that the cumulative effect of a 12-game schedule against much tougher opposition is far worse than whatever the WAC and I-AA throw at Boise every year. Yeah, Boise’s similar in size to Iowa. And Iowa got banged the fuck up by the Big Ten—as did most teams in the conference. Beating a team like Oregon in September is one thing. Beating 12 teams of Oregon’s physical caliber over the course of a season is quite another.

I could see you losing players left and right in the Big Ten over the course of a full season.” He wasn’t saying that anybody would lose players “left and right” playing in the Big 10. He said that BSU would, with all the trickery and attention grabbing stuff. You are reading something reasonable into what he said, when he said nothing of the sort.

Furthermore: “Beating 12 teams of Oregon’s physical caliber over the course of a season is quite another”? Look, BSU’s schedule is terrible. No one here has disputed that. All Bronco fans would all love to jump to a better conference. I’d love to go 8-4 in the Pac-10, instead of 12-0 in the WAC. But nobody plays 12 teams of Oregon’s physical caliber. Not even USC, which is one of the few programs left that won’t play a 1-AA team. And it wouldn’t matter anyway, because the idea that a BSU-type playing a major conference schedule would suffer many serious injuries, more than an Iowa-type team is wrongheaded. Think about it: does a weak-sister Big 10 team like Indiana, or Baylor in the Big 12, or WASU in the Pac-10 or Vanderbilt in the SEC, etc suffer noticeably more injuries than the power teams? I don’t think so.

Also, my second paragraph was about being friends and finding common ground. So, if I was trolling, I must really suck at it. I’ve actually tried to get Iowa compliments today. If you want to ignore those compliments, well, I can’t stop you, but the compliments are there regardless.

Blow this asshole

I never suggested B10 teams don’t suffer injuries…that’s the fucking point. Your analysis is WAC.

Sorry

No, wait, I called you a blowhard and you said “blow this asshole”. That wasn’t nice. You’ve been rude up and down these comments. If you’re upset that I called you a blowhard, well, you get what you give. You say “get self-esteem rehab” and “I could see you losing players left and right in the Big Ten over the course of a full season[,]” then I will call you a blowhard and ask if you think that Broncos play for the Little Lord Fauntleroy School for Albino Hemophiliacs. Eh, enough. I’ll leave to go back to the real world and leave you be.

by marktgarten on Dec 4, 2009 5:10 PM CST up reply actions

I think you are missing the point.

The point of the argument is that the Big 10 is a much more grueling conference than is the WAC. Thusly, if BSU played a Big 10/Pac 10/SEC schedule it would suffer far more injuries than it does in its current situation.

Quit being a dick.

"You wouldn’t know about that"

If you are referring to injuries ruining seasons, I think I do, as I play fantasy football.

If you are referring to following a major conference, I went to USC Law, and root for the Trojans, except where it conflicts in some way with rooting for the Broncos (like this season, where I rooted for Oregon to improve BSU’s terrible SOS). For me, though, that just puts Boise St.’s success into perspective, because I see what can happen when a coaching staff fails to get a team up for a conference game against a weak opponent (see, e.g., 13-9 and Stanford ’07).

by marktgarten on Dec 4, 2009 1:24 PM CST reply actions

You know about injuries because of fantasy football?

You’re kidding, right? No way this was meant to be serious. If so, please stop, you are actually making the internets dumber.

Yes, HG

That was not a serious comment.

Although everyone who has rooted for a team for any length of time knows about how seasons can be ruined by injuries to key players. Somewhere in these comments I even said that Iowa would have beaten tOSU with Stanzi. Iowa’s season wasn’t ruined, exactly, but, being a fan of USC, I assume that you Big 10 fans would agree with the idea that there’s a big difference between having a nice season and going to some bowl, and winning your conference and going to the Rose Bowl.

Apology,

Dear Iowa fans,

I’m very sorry if some of our comments have come across as argumentative or rude. Can Boise State fans be overconfident and arrogant sometimes? Yes, they can. I blame that on Mikrino’s stat (above) of our 5 losing seasons in the last 60 years, or so. We don’t like losing, and we don’t do it very often. (Please refrain for SOS jokes at this time. Thank you.)

I’d like to make the point that I don’t think Iowa fans, in general, understand Boise State fans. Yes, we play a weaker schedule, and all BSU fans know that. But that doesn’t mean that when people attack our program using that as evidence, we won’t defend our team as best we can. We are an up and coming program that isn’t afraid of anyone. Actually, it’s the other way around, as big name BCS schools refuse to put us on their schedule. Yes, I admit it. We’re probably a little insecure when it comes to SOS talk, which is why we often respond in ways that are not kind, or productive.

The same goes to our Blue Turf. It gets attacked a lot, and it can be frustrating to hear people spew about false rules, or unfair advantages, when we’ve heard every derogatory remark in the book. Don’t like our turf? Fine. But please get your facts straight before you attack it.

In closing, I’d just like to say that I really look forward to playing you guys in the Fiesta Bowl (if the cards fall that way), and it should be a good game. I honestly hope to blow you out of the water, but I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

Can we shake hands and be opponents?

I’d sure like that; problem is, your dogs are still taking shits in our living room. We just got the place re-carpeted and everything.

Seriously, it’s taking a lot of patience not to take out the banhammer with all the trolling going on right now. Don’t put this on Iowa fans. We’ve been the classy ones in this thread.

Please...

point out to me where I said this was Iowa fans’ fault? I called my fellow fans “argumentative, rude, overconfident, and arrogant”. The above post was more an explanations of the responses you are getting than a dig against Iowa’s fans. Most of you seem nice enough, just unaware of what really makes us Broncos tick.

Once again, I really do respect your program, and wish you the best. Until we play, that is. :)

Keep it up. It’s a good thread, covering quite a few gamuts. I see far more class, on both sides, than carpet poo.

Interesting thread, at the very least.

I can’t believe it took off like it did. I guess the link from One Bronco Nation Under God probably helped. I was certain that this fanpost was dead after SpartanDan (and logic) crushed the idea that Iowa and Boise were sealed and ready to be delivered.

If this game is made, then I imagine the next few weeks are going to be a blasty.

Now now...

some of us are staying classy as well. most of us are just looking for a little jawing; a little competitive spirit. i’ve seen Iowa play a few times this year, and, like i said way up there^^, i think a game between the two of us would be a fast-paced shootout.

in any case, most of you guys are pretty cool, and i look forward to the next couple of weeks, if we do indeed match up.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

hahahahaha

okay, okay, maybe shootout was the wrong word. bottom line – both of our offenses are capable of throwing up points in a hurry. this game could be a lot of fun to watch.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

by howiestheman on Dec 4, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions

Wait, just a second.

You said you’ve seen Iowa play this year. Really? Because I watched every Iowa game this year and the only time I saw an offense capable of throwing points up in a hurry was the 4th quarter of the Indiana game after Stanzi underwent a sideline exorcism. Unless you’re setting us up for a joke about STANZIBALLS. In which case, bravo.

I’ll admit that I know very, very little about Boise State. What I see on the stat sheet is that they’ve put up a bunch of points against weak opposition. I agree that this is an intriguing game, but not because of the shootout potential. To me, the intriguing aspect is the Boise offense against the Iowa defense.

Sure, Boise can hang 50 on a bunch of one-win programs, but can they do it against the #10 defense in the country? Conversely, Iowa has built up some pretty solid defensive statistics, but if Big Ten offenses are as bad as the MSM says, how good is the Iowa defense really?

I think there are some interesting sidelights to this game (i.e. how good is the Iowa offense with a healthy Stanzi, Dace and A-Rob? How important will “hidden yards” be? What happens when people stop being polite and start being real?) but the strength-on-strength aspect is the most interesting part of this game to me.

I believe (no offense Iowa fans) that we have the classiest fanbase in the nation. I was just trying to smooth a few things over after the heated discussions above.

By the way, all of adjectives above are ones that I suffer from myself. If my brain didn’t stop working properly when I was upset, I’m sure I would have posted things very similar to what Mikrino has been posting. (All of which I agree with, by the way.) Unfortunately for me, when I’m angry all of my arguments come out sounding incoherent. Maybe it’s better that way…

where he claimed God hates Iowa and showed photos of the floods that ravaged the state. That was the ultimate class post. Maybe SBn will pick it up and put it out there for more people to see. Because, well, it’s just so classy to make fun of real heartbreak.

It's true

HoyaGoon’s johnson’s reputation is exceedingly distinguished. It actually gets invited to State Dinners.

This post is what Boise fans are like in my head...

No one says things like, “Oh, look, BSU beat UC Davis 14-12.” You have to rape their faces off to show how good you are. I’m not going to venture to guess whether you got that accomplished this year or not.

by Eyeheartfreedumb on Dec 4, 2009 11:28 PM CST up reply actions

That's probably smart (not venturing a guess)

Face Rape is an exceptionally difficult speculative endeavor.

Mikrino's been banned

Which means his posts in this tread (and the replies thereof) have gone away.

Look, there’s a right and wrong way to go about this. Most of the BSU fans were doing it the right way. Trolling, making light of the recent disasters here, and willfully (and openly) dragging down the level of discourse are not.

There were hints of comments that were questionable at best

But it was weird because all of those comments that were referenced had poofed into thin air. But then I put two and two together after your “banhammer” comment (which was so pro, btw) and figured they’d been axed. I think it’s amazing how volatile a group of BSU fans can get when trying to hype up their team while perpetually defending their signature win/SOS/horrible conference. It’s got to be exhausting.
