New Blog: Along The Olentangy for Ohio State Fans!

Bummer guys. All I have heard is that Iowa fans traveled like nobody's business. On the Other hand, Boise State has sold over 17,000 tickets and will more than likely sell their 19,000 in the next few days. Welcome to being excited about your team.

You are aware that there are OTHER sources of tickets aside from the university allotment, right?

And — SHOCK — they frequently have better seats available than what’s available from the university?

by RossWB on Dec 14, 2009 4:53 PM CST reply actions

So you're saying...

no Boise State or Ohio State fans are buying from other outlets? Only Iowa fans are smart enough not to buy tickets directly from the school.

by Finloopio on Dec 14, 2009 4:57 PM CST reply actions

Thanks for putting words in my mouth, you fucking retard.

And learn how to use the “reply” function.

I said nothing of the sort. You implied that Iowa fans weren’t traveling to the game that well. I noted that there are more tickets available than just the ones available through the university and assumed that you could make the logical conclusion that many Iowa fans are buying those tickets. Perhaps I overestimated you: MANY (as in more than a few) ARE BUYING (as in exchanging currency for a product) TICKETS (as in what you need to gain admission to the game) TO THE ORANGE BOWL (as in the big game in Miami that we’re going to) FROM OTHER SOURCES (as in third-party ticket vendors).

There will be no shortage of Iowa fans at the Orange Bowl. Since the university has routinely been getting ticket allotments from bowl games in crappy locations, Iowa fans have learned to take advantage of other sources. You get savvy to things like that when you routinely go to better bowls than the Some Fucking Bank Poinsettia Bowl or the Third-Rate Sponsor Hometown Bowl you guys have in your backyard.

You know...

You know Boise State is not BYU right? No Mormon affiliation and not even in Utah… are you just an idiot or are you so witty that you’re over my head on this one?

by Finloopio on Dec 14, 2009 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

And you do know

That Idaho has the second largest LDS population both in absolute and relative terms, right? Add that to your state’s proud militia heritage and I’m sure that there are some fundamentalist Mormons in the mountains with multiple wives.

by BHGPprovidesLaughs on Dec 15, 2009 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

Actually.

I live in eastern Idaho and I know of a specific family who owns a pizza franchise who is polygamist. Interestingly enough, he’s not LDS.

So, where were you going with all of this?

That is hilarious. By the way, what was going on between 1880 and 1900, did the corpse of Brigham Young rise from the grave and go on a rampage?

Uh, yeah, the spiked period there...

….well, let’s just say we have a street in Iowa City called Mormon Trek Blvd.

That is because the Mormons "trek"ed through Iowa on their way from Illinois to Idaho/Utah (really, what’s the difference?).

No seriously, why? Iowa’s not your opponent in the bowl game; you didn’t get denied a BCS bowl game berth because of Iowa; Boise has no history with Iowa. So again, WHY ARE YOU HERE?

I gotta agree with the bronco

color me disappointed. And his point stands, I don’t buy the argument that Iowa buys from other sources at a higher rate then Boise State… especially since they have been to the Fiesta bowl more recently than Iowa has been to the Orange.

The truth is, just as our traveling to the orange bowl in 2003 won us this trip to the Orange bowl, our showing this year may well cost us a trip in the future, if it is ever close.

That said, I bought 3 tickets to the OB and I didn’t do it through the Hawkeye Sports site…

by BornaHawk on Dec 14, 2009 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Well...
color me disappointed. And his point stands, I don’t buy the argument that Iowa buys from other sources at a higher rate then Boise State… especially since they have been to the Fiesta bowl more recently than Iowa has been to the Orange.

That isn’t what I’m saying, though. He’s using one point of data — ticket sales from the university — to make his point, which is stupid. There are other points of data to consider, particularly when there’s considerable anecdotal evidence behind the “Iowa fans are buying tickets from other sources” notion.

I think it’s a little surprising that the tickets aren’t moving more briskly from the university, but it’s not completely illogical, either. The Tuesday date is evidently a deal-breaker for a lot of people, virtually all of the buzz was for the Fiesta Bowl (until very, very late) and Iowa had reportedly pre-sold 175000 tickets to the Fiesta and lots of Iowa fans had (foolishly, as it turned out) made plans to attend that bowl, and while BCS bowls are nothing at all to sniff at, this is the 7th trip to Florida in the last 9 years. It’s unrealistic to not expect at least some Florida fatigue among the fanbase. And, no offense to Georgia Tech, but they aren’t (yet) the sort of marquee program that really juices excitement. I strongly suspect that if Iowa was playing someone like Florida the excitement would be much higher.

Will Iowa sell out its allotment? Yes — it’s not like they’ve barely sold half of it. Will there be many more fans there that bought other tickets? Unquestionably. Is there still going to be a very sizable contingent of Iowa fans there? Yes, absolutely. Is the Boise State fan trolling? Without a doubt.

by RossWB on Dec 14, 2009 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

I think a big part of this that people are overlooking

(as has been stated elsewhere) that a lot of people are not buying tickets because of the date of the game (January 5th) as most people would be willing to take the New Year’s Eve vacation in Miami, but taking time off during the week and traveling is just too much for most Hawk fans in today’s economy. When they can watch the game, for free, on television, blowing a huge wad of cash doesn’t seem like a great idea. IIRC, the Orange Bowl is traditionally a January 1st or 2nd game, which is not possible due to the NFL on Sunday and Monday. That said, the TCU/BSU game IS on a Monday and they are selling well.

Make no mistake, the Hawks will have over 20,000 fans in attendance, but most of those will be walk-up or scalper purchases, but the reputation of Iowa fans will most likely take a hit with this one.

by The Nihilist on Dec 14, 2009 9:34 PM CST reply actions

For what it's worth...

Iowa had sold its allotment of Fiesta Bowl tickets (17,500) before the announcement.

The OB sales are a bit disappointing, but there are any numbers of other factors. Comparing Boise’s Fiesta sales to Iowa’s Orange Bowl sales, however, is stupid.

They're expecting 30,000 Iowa fans

In other words, the capacity of your stadium (which you didn’t even fill for most games this year).

Go buy more worthless “stock” in your team and enjoy your half-full Fiesta Bowl.

If you take out 1500 seats, sure

Your stadium seats 33,500. You averaged 32,600. You claim your stadium seats only 32,000, which allows you “sellouts.” And, even if you sell the place out, congrats on finding 32,600 fans. You’re officially Northwestern.

Apples to Oranges.

You see, you can knock us for our community size, stadium size, attendance, etc. But it really doesn’t do any good.

The point being made it, YOU’RE expected to bring big money into this game. Boise is not. Boise/TCU is only because of a good match-up. But Iowa? Would you even be offered a 2nd invite over the PAC-10 if it wasn’t for the fan/market following? I doubt not.

OMG MONEY MATTERS IN BOWL GAMES? Thanks for pointing that out.

Why don’t you just go back to being happy that the Pac 10 was riddled with parity and the Big 12 decided to be terrible this year — that’s the only reason you’re in a BCS game this year.

by RossWB on Dec 15, 2009 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

Correct, apples to oranges

I can knock you for community size, stadium size, attendance, etc. because they all coincide with a minor program in a minor conference, which is what Boise is and always will be. I appreciate the fact that you seem to understand this. The next step is to accept the fact that, given that status, you simply haven’t done enough to deserve some glorification. The gnashing of teeth at OBNUG would be cute if it weren’t so serious. You’re lucky to be curbstomped by TCU, because it will allow you to continue your “elite program” fantasy.

And we have brought big money to the Orange Bowl in the past, and we will again. We’ll bring twice as many as our opponent, by all estimates, and we sold more tickets to the Fiesta Bowl – where we aren’t even playing – than Boise has to date. We’ll take at least 30k to Miami. You’ll be lucky to find 2/3 of that to go to Glendale.

Also, to repeat: There was not another Pac-10 team eligible for the BCS. So, yeah, we would have gotten a second invite even if we brought a pathetic contingent of fans like, say, Boise State.

Before you respond, let me remind you: Brian Cook called me smug, which makes me the Obama of smugness. I'm basically Smugbama.

The gnashing of teeth at OBNUG would be cute if it weren’t so serious.

I’d be extremely impressed if you found any hint of that at OBNUG. Your trolling in our neck of the woods has done nothing to anyone but you. Do you really need that much self-generated-confidence?

The PAC-10 didn’t have any teams ranked high enough in the final BCS standings to be eligible for a BCS bowl. Yes, I do suspect that we would have been selected over them.

by BHGPprovidesLaughs on Dec 15, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions

Correct you are.

And I respect that. That said, I’m happy Iowa was selected over Penn State. That says something about the bowl administration. Penn State has a larger fan base/market pull and you most definitely deserved it over them.
