Deep Thought For The Night

When Ricky Stanzi went down today, why did Iowa have to rely on James Vandenberg--an untested, two-star quarterback--with a perfect season on the line? Doesn't Iowa need either a highly-rated backup or one with starting experience?

Star-divide

Peaceout_medium

Yes, shame on Kirk Ferentz for not having a highly-rated recruit with tons of experience to save the game. .

what a quandry?

Stanzi was only getting respect after he was 8-0. Ferentz can’t win….Vandy just wasn’t ready and it shows how fragile ANY program can be….when Barkley went down at USC…they lost to Washington.

Unfortunately I have tickets for next week and I’m going to get blasted by OSU fan who now thinks they are awesome again. KOK called a good game, Vandy just wasn’t ready….

This makes me think

of Dennis Dixon a few years ago. He blows his knee out and Oregon goes from NC dreams to an also ran. His chance for a Heisman is gone and he’s a backup in Pittsburgh instead of, potentially, starting somewhere.

I thought I heard Jake was in attendance today.

So perhaps between the Curse of Jake and the SI Jinx, we simply had no shot.

(I am kidding of course, in case it is not completely obvious.)

That said, from the Weird But True Department: Jake remains the last Iowa QB to beat jNWU since Brad Banks.

I suppose this is why, even in the midst of five picks against Indiana, Ferentz said he never considered pulling Stanzi.

by HawkeyedFrog on Nov 8, 2009 9:04 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I get that this whole thread is a bit satirical, but

I was actually relieved by Vandy’s performance. A redshirt freshman with all of 3 snaps in in the BXI goes in with a 9-0 season on the line and did all we could hope for, he managed the game and really only made one fuck up. He didn’t freak out under the pressure. His decision making looked OK. His passing could have been better but he showed he has an arm on him, he just needs to learn the offense and work with the receivers…. he had a couple passes that would have won the game if they had been a yard closer to the receiver.

Once Stanzi is gone, it looks like we have a pretty good replacement waiting in the wings, and for Iowa that’s nothing to sneeze at.

In 100 years, we'll all be dead.

by Flakbait on Nov 8, 2009 9:21 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't know if I would describe my reaction as "relieved"

But I was actually surprised that Vandenberg looked I lot better than I imagined. This is mostly because I had amazingly low expectations.

First off, let’s admit that Vandy looked like a freshmen QB out there today. But there were some promising signs. First, as Flakbait noted, kid’s got a rocket arm. And as the game progressed, Vandy improved. When he first got out there, he seemed determined to go to his first read and only the first option. Later in the game he was actually making his progressions and checking down to his other options. The deep passes were there, the timing was just off. This is largely a function of Vandenberg not being in rhythm with his receivers. Not surprising since it seems he’s never practiced with the ones. You would hope that this is something that will be improved upon during practice this week. Our air attack will definitely suffer, I have no illusions about it, but I really expect it to be much better next week than it was yesterday.

Criminy, but some people....

….have forgotten how shaky such players as even Chuck Long and Matt Rodgers looked when they first saw the field. VERY few QB’s can come in unexpectedly in the middle of a tight game and perform well.

Give Vandenberg some time with the 1st team in practice and some game experience and I think he’s going to be very good. But to expect him to light up the field yesterday is to expect too much.

I thought that perhaps we could’ve run the ball a bit more—-still can’t believe Vandy threw 27 (!) pass attempts—but then again, all it would’ve taken was Marvin pulling down one of those balls and it’s a new ballgame.

Yesterday was a perfect shit-storm, the only one that makes us lose to NW. And it happened.

If it's not too much trouble, search your soul--and then ask yourself if maybe I might have a point.

Peyton Manning's

first year in the NFL was lousy. He’s done OK since then. I’m not worried about Vandy at all.

I think I’d be more nervous about a hot shit start because the kid might mistake beginners luck for skill, then tank.

by Flakbait on Nov 8, 2009 11:19 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

In some ways, we're kinda reaping what we've sown here

It’d have been really nice to get Vandy some reps against UNI, Ark St., and Indiana, but instead those were tight, down to the wire games, and he winds up with all of one series on the season. I’m not sure the extra experience would have totally prepared him (an undefeated season on the line is still a lot of pressure), but it sure as hell wouldn’t have hurt.

Still I agree that the kid has some potential. He can throw deep pretty well, his reads weren’t terrible, and he can move around in the pocket a bit. I’d like to see a little more zip on those out-routes, and it’d be nice if he didn’t stare down receivers so much (I can’t even count the number of attempts where he just stared at DJK the whole play), but on the whole he looks like he’ll be a solid QB.

by NorseHawk on Nov 8, 2009 9:41 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

99%

of all QB’s need to learn not to stare down receivers. They can get away with it in high school, but then it ends.

Was anybody else surprised to learn that it’s a Hawkeye that holds the NFL interception record? And what did Griese credit it to? He read the QB’s eyes.

In 100 years, we'll all be dead.

Vandywill

be alright once he gets some reps with the big boys this week. What would really help(helped all damn year!) is if we had healthy running backs. The lack of a serious run threat or even a time killing smashmouth threat eliminates the possible game managing talent of Vandy. He could check down to Moeaki, hit Wegher/Robinson in the flat, wildcat with McNutt, etc. We need a running game like it’s no one’s business. I can’t say anything bad about Wegher cuz the kid has been thrown in the fire FAST. I’m not completely writing us off for the year, but think about next year. Jewel starting with Robinson as a back up, oh my god it brings a tear to my eye how sweet that will be. Also, we will have Ricky AND Robinson back 100% for the bowl game!

Depth

who really has depth in college. There is no pre-season if you play UNI down to the wire and are scared shitless against Iowa State (we got those subs in late in that game). So we had no chance to devlop a back-up QB.

Most teams lose that game yesterday. Most pro style offenses that goes from an experienced QB to a redshirt FR. with three snaps lose. In the spread a QB can just use his feet. The spread conceals inferior intellect and experience. The QB just runs around trying to make plays. Persa was a great example of this. The back-up at Cinncy did this at South Florida when Pike went down.

In a way, our offense is a high risk offense. You lose an experienced player and your fucked. But, there are things that have been weird this year. Namely, I can’t figure out the game plan. We had a double tights at one point. Then we had a five wides at one point. We ran stretch plays then we did not. We had screens and dump offs and then we were the Oakland Raiders of he 70s.

Maybe some perspective

We played basically all of the second quarter on yesterday with the second string QB (redshirt freshman – with three reps total in his college career) and the fourth string tailback (true freshman). This in accordance with the depth chart at the beginning of the season. So we are undefeated in a BXI game with a lot of fans and media talking about a shot at a national championship game with the total age of our backfield at 37 years old – no pressure there. This is not good. Then consider the game was the fifth incarnation of our offensive line with our mid-season all-American out.

I have no doubt that our first stringers could play with almost anyone in the country but I doubt very much there is a team out there that could piece together not just a competitive unit but a winning unit with this situation. One of the biggest difference between us and teams like Florida, Alabama USC and Texas is the shorter drop off from first to second string – not that there is anything wrong with our second string but in those other cases their second string could start at 95% of other schools without an issue. I love our second string and our program. We are going nuts celebrating because we were 9-0! I have a co-worker from LSU who told me they won’t watch another game because they lost to Alabama and the season is over – WTF?!?! If you expect a national title every year become a Patriots fan.

Again, I love where we are, I hope people aren’t giving up on this season, a healthy Stanzi would make all things better but we are not in a bad position when you look at the season. Who would have chewed one of their thumbs off in August for a 9-1 start? We win one of the next two games and it is a 10 win season!!!!!! We win two and we have won the Big XI. Lose two and we have a better record than last year and will kick the shit out of our opponent in our NY’s Day bowl game. Granted OSU is looking a little more daunting but get Vandenburg some reps and who knows? No one gave us a much of a chance at PSU and we bitch-made Clarke, leaned on the defense and won that going away. Pryor looked good yesterday but one quarterback had to win, he lofts passes like a pussy and hasn’t been defended by Tyler Motherfuckin’ Sash at safety.

It is one historic year an it isn’t over – lets sit back and ENJOY the fucking ride.

Now that lifted my spirits a bit.
Who would have chewed one of their thumbs off in August for a 9-1 start? We win one of the next two games and it is a 10 win season!!!!!! We win two and we have won the Big XI.

It is amazing how expectations can change during the course of the season. Before the season began, I thought 9-3 would be a heck of a season with this schedule, especially after Jewel went down in camp. Still, it’s an inevitable progression. Once the Rose Bowl began to seem like an actually attainable goal (and it still is — just beat OSU next week), expectations changed. Losing three in a row would be a really sour way to end the season even if, logically, it would be somewhat understandable based on all the losses on offense.

But hopefully we can win at least one of the remaining regular season games and a bowl game; an 11-2 season would still be something to celebrate, even if for a few weeks it looked like it could have been something really special.

by RossWB on Nov 8, 2009 2:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

Wegher is fifth string from the summer. The order was:
Hampton
O’Meara
Brinson
Robinson
Wegher

The receivers this season who have missed time:
DJK
Moeaki
Sandeman
Chaney
Stross

I won’t go into the O-line. Oh, and not a single senior among that group up there.

I can see why the coaches are a little gun shy about the offense.

not to mention

Arvell Nelson was supposed to be the stud of his class not Stanzi. I guess i didn’t see the harm in putting McNutt back there and seeing what would happen. We ran the option with Banks so the plays are in the playbook and McNutt knows the call through and through having play’d both WR and QB. Any thoughts on this and why o why this wouldn’t happen? What do we owe Vandy? I think McNutt gives us the best option because he can scramble if all goes to hell/knowledge of the playbook. Don’t give me the he hasn’t taken reps all season crap, neither has Vandy with the first team and do you really want him under center in the shoe? I say grow some balls KF and KOK and go McNutt and run the plays we ran with Banks.

Go McNutt flea-flicker

on every series. Cornfuse the bejebus out of ole sveater-vest. Anything but run to the left on 1st down, pass into the flat on second down, pass long on 3rd down, punt.

by Stay thirsty, my friends. on Nov 9, 2009 8:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I was thinking too

McNutt has played with this first string all season and had as much experience at QB as any of the backups entering that last game. It’s not like our receiving corps is lacking without him; there’s still DJK, Strouss, and Moeaki.

by teii44 on Nov 9, 2009 11:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

IF they go Wildcat (and they won't)

they’ll use DJK who was a running QB in H.S.

McNutt is not as fast, or more importantly, as quick as DJK. In any event, they are alikely to go tons of shotgun so you’ll get half your wish. I expect a ton of short, quick stuff to start, then depending on how OSU defenses us they will adjust to either roll out, running game, deep stuff. I think you’ll see fewer plays but a pretty aggressive first quarter in terms of play calling. they know that all third downs will be a death sentence so they will take plenty of first down risk.

i'm just saying

For poise and with everything on the table i’d feel more comfortable with someone who’s play’d in big games.(i know not at qb but still) If Vandy is the future that is fine, i’m living in the now and who do you think know’s the playbook better and gives us the best shot for this one game? I’m a realist and it won’t happen but my money’s on McNutt!

My money would be on

Vandenberg. McNutt has given up on QB and for good reason. The talk was he wasn’t very good at it, at all. Inconsistent throwing, not a strong arm, not acccurate, and not good reading defenses. Just not good. Nice guy. Made the right move.

i didn't

know all that. I have faith in the staff and i think the game plan put in place will work. Iowa is going to shock the world this weekend, but not me. Seeing how Pryor’s throws seem to hang in the air forever the D will come up with a couple of big plays which has been lacking lately and Iowa clinches the Rose Bowl Berth! Go Hawks!
