Hawkeye Nation Invades Columbia, Missouri

I live in Columbia, Missouri.  A lovely place for many reasons, but for a person who likes Big XI football, it can be a hellish place to dwell. The debate over who is going to come out on top in the Big XII North has me on the threshold of donating my eardrums to science before I'm dead.

I'm seeing more and more Iowa shirts, hats, coats, etc... in this fair city.  And every single time I see one, a "Go Hawks" or "How 'Bout Them Hawkeyes" follows within .09 seconds of me and the other person making eye contact. For example, I was at the game this weekend, and my wife and I had just gotten back and were at Target returning some duplicate wedding gifts.  I spotted another couple sporting Iowa shirts.  All we did was point to each other and give a fist pump.  Nothing needed to be said.

The point of this post is that for those of us who live outside the state of Iowa, and I can only speak for myself here, I've never been more proud to be not only a University of Iowa fan, but also an Iowan.  It's something that never leaves you, even if you move to Big 12 North country. This team embodies so many values I learned while growing up on a farm. People keep doubting, and I simply smile, have eleventy-bajillion heart attacks on Saturday and ignore the "lucky" comments on Monday.  Iowans ALWAYS find a way to get the job done. I have no reason to believe this team won't follow that personality trait so many Iowans possess.

Thank you Hawkeyes for the best season of my lifetime.  I will never forget it.

Same goes for Northern VA...

more and more Hawk gear is coming out of the closets. I’ve been wearing my trusty, ragged Hawks hat to work and have had several other Hawk fans holler out something to me on the Metro (DC’s mass transit system).

There is a tall, modern condo building I pass each day on the way to work on I-66. From one of the top floor balconies proudly flies a gold-on-black Tiger Hawk! To that person’s credit, that flag has been flying all season long.

More and more people around here are admitting (as if they are ashamed) they are native Iowans. Even my wife (a native Pennsylvanian) is telling folks that her husband (me) is from Iowa. It is crazy! We really needed this to find each other. As it turns out, we surround them!

Just keep winning!

@Hawkeyesbaby...

Now, what you should do is get into a flag arms race with those Michigan fans, until one of you has a flag so big that it covers 7/8 of the facade your entire building.

I've sentenced boys younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them.

I wish there were some Hawkeyes.....

Or even just a coupla College Football fans.
I’m in upstate NY and I think people out here confuse CFB with College LaCrosse. There are a few Nittany’s and a few Syracuse fans (if you can get them to admit it). I ran into one Hawkeye fan at a bar last year during the ISU game but we are definitely few and far between. Oh well, no biggie. I finally got the BXI Network so i haven’t missed a snap since watching the end of the Northern Iowa game. Great season so far. I’m totally worried about jNW but i’ve been worried about every single game this year.
GO HAWKS!!!! Keep those flags flying!

I second that

Since I have no other fans to talk with personally about Iowa, I rely on this site. I can’t say I would be on here if I actually lived in Iowa or Denver. Thanks OPS, HS, RossWB, and HFMR.

OKC here

Try living in Oklahoma City and being a Hawkeye fan. Last year, when the Hawks lost all those close games, people gave me shit saying how the great teams define their season by winning the close ones. My oh my, how the shoe is on the other foot.

It’s hilarious how Owho fans slobber their shit everywhere and try to defend their 3 loss team. Talk about excuses. And then they have the balls to knock the Hawks over their close games just like everyone else.

As for finding any Hawkeye related apparel, good luck. I went to “Hat World” the place that claims to have the biggest selection of the obvious, and guess what? No Iowa hats. This state has no clue that college football exists outside the big xii footprint. They have their heads so far up their own asses they can’t even carry on a conversation outside their own division much less the entire conference.

On a positive note. Somebody at work made a comment to me the other day on how all the Iowa fans in this state have seem to come out of the woodwork. I told them they have always been here, it’s just you guys have your head too far up your own asses to realize their is football outside of Norman. They seem perplexed at this idea and really have no way of grasping the idea.

FUCK YOU, WE’RE IOWA!

Bay Area Hawk

I met one stranger on the streets sporting a #44 hawk jersey, which i assumed to be of the Dallas Clark/Fucking Awesome era. Needless to say I shouted out a “Go Hawks” from the other side of the street to this fellow. After that he looked my direction and screamed, “Fuck Hawks, fuck Hawks, fuck hawks…” and he charged at me only to be hit by a Volvo…Highlight of my life. Or maybe second to this season and the birth of by alien child Nemogotu. Or to this acid trip in which Willem Defoe is screaming in my ear to type this shit…Fuck Willem Defoe.

Not as far

but in South Dakota you either root for Minnesota or you don’t know what college football is (kinda sad since i got to the NEW MVC powerhouse.) but still i have been seeing an abundance of iowa shirts, caps etc around. even saw a kid with an Iowa Fuckin’ City shirt yesterday. GO HAWKS. this has been such a fun season and i too will never forget it

Richmond, VA

There are about 2 other “authentic” Iowa fans here. But the bandwagon is slowly picking up passengers. The big change was VA Tech’s loss to UNC last Thursday. Prior to that game, when wearing my lucky Iowa shirt/sweatshirt out on gameday, I would usually get dismissive looks and/or derogatory comments about how the Hokies would stompt the Hawks. Last weekend, with VA Tech effectively eliminated from the BCS, all of a sudden a bunch of people came up to me at BW3 in Tech gear to congratulate us on the win and tell me how they were rooting for Iowa. Far be of it me to cast off new fans, but I found their timing suspicious.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

A Hawk in SEC/ACC country

I live in Western North Carolina, where there are no major schools, but the Tennessee Vols seem to have somewhat of a presence here with Knoxville on the other side of the mountain. Anyway, several times when I sport my Iowa garb, people stop or come up to me to ask where I’m from, how long Ive been down here, etc. The couple I used to watch games with down here moved back to Iowa City in April. I haven’t seen any other Iowa fans at the sports bars on game day, but am always hopeful. Thank God for BHGP!!

Checking in. And as far as cabins and herds of cattle may I remind you of the same wrong stereotypes people hold over Iowa? “Fuck You, we’re Iowa” is enough of a statement about us – no need to attempt any superiority over anyone else.

There is some info on that

But it’s optional to put in and there’s no easy way to aggregate the data with our system. As commenters have noted below, the map’s pretty varied—but that’s also in small part because we get some weird, weird google searches sometimes.

As far as members, we’ve got a hair over 1,100 registered users (w00t to all of you), and 198 have come since October 1. That’s seriously impressive. It’s all we can do sometimes not to just sit back and marvel.

Be a good idea to put what bars people go to watch the games at

DC Area: Crystal City Sports Pub. http://www.ccsportspub.com/

Its the home of the Iowa DC Alumni group. Place was ape shit crazy at the end of the Michigan St game. We had so many people there that a lot of fans from other teams were asking if there was anyone left in Iowa.

by vahawk on Nov 4, 2009 2:55 PM CST reply actions

CCSP is probably one of the best places to watch the game...

even though (the last time I watched a game there) our section could use a few big screenscreens and the pool-tables moved around to better accomodate all the Hawk fans. Truth be told, I haven’t been down to CCSP yet this year because we’ve been winning and I don’t want to ruin our (dare I say) good fortunes.

Love reading this kind of stuff...

Especially considering all of my roommates here in Chicago are die-hard Mizzou fans. I tell you what though, gameplay aside, Missouri fans remind me quite a bit of Iowa fans. It’s probably why I tend to get along with them.

…and bandwagons fans aren’t all bad. I’ve even gotten my Mizzou loving roomies to start watching Hawkeye games even when I’m not home. Love it.

by hawkeyeguy85 on Nov 4, 2009 4:05 PM CST reply actions

With all due respect to your roommates

Mizzou fans are NOTHING like Iowa fans…in any way shape or form. At least generally speaking. This is a fanbase whose team was ranked #3 in the nation to start last football season, every reason to think they’d be in the national title mix all year long. They couldn’t sell out their home opener against Directional State University for the Deaf and Blind. A solid portion of the fanbase for Mizzou is very bandwagon-y, a good part is like Iowa; realistic and faithful, and the rest are fucking delusional.

That said, I’m glad I live in Columbia and not in Lawrence. I don’t think I could handle KU fans.

by MissouriHawk on Nov 4, 2009 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm

I’ve never been to Columbia or a Mizzou game for that matter, but they are pretty hardcore so maybe I’m getting a misrepresentation of their fanbase. That said, however, I’ve been to The Spread in Lincoln Park on multiple occasions to watch their games and they have been pretty crazy. Nothing like Merkle’s or Barleycorn’s, obviously, but still devout.

I am, however, going to my first Tiger game against KU in Kansas City. I’ve developed a mild hatred of those rock-chalk motherfuckers in the time that I’ve known my roomies…hahaha.

by hawkeyeguy85 on Nov 4, 2009 10:56 PM CST up reply actions

I've been a couple Mizzou games, and I made the same comparison

Those were both two years ago when they were really good though, so maybe they’re more bandwagony that I though. Regardless, it was a fun place to see a game, and I loved CoMo. It reminds me a lot of Iowa City.

by NorseHawk on Nov 5, 2009 8:46 AM CST up reply actions

Yep.

I love Columbia. If there were fewer Cardinals fans around, it would be infinitely better. Wish downtown had a Ped Mall type area, but I really can’t complain.

This truly is a magical season. I know this since my die hard Michigan fan is secretly following the Hawks. He’ll never admit it. But it’s hard not to notice when he’s texting me everytime Iowa does something great and cheering us on.

We have a few Hawks here in Connecticut. Another Iowa grad where I work has all the BXI mini-helmets in his office that he lines up in order of the weekly standings – it’s great to have the black and gold in front! Won a bottle of scotch from the UM grad – boy does that taste good!

Chicago is a fun town to be a Hawkeye in

There are a TON of us here, so everywhere you go you see something Hawkeye-related. But, this being the capitol of Big Ten Country, there are also a lot of fans of other B10 schools, which means there are also a TON of people around here who fucking hate us. And that’s a beautiful thing too. I LOVE wearing my crappy Tigerhawk hat or a tshirt or whatever out & about…
Like Mohawk said, the eye contact, the knowing nods & silent fist pumps… that’s my favorite, even more than the “Go Hawks!” I hear.

I am totally with you man. I love getting the random “Go Hawks” here and there, but even more is the seeing each other and the nod of the head or just a high five with nothing more said. It connects you to someone you may never see again and have that shared excitement that no one else around you understands.

I agree. The MSM sports pundits might have that who-do-they-think-they-are hatred for us, but I have this ever growing suspicion that the rest of the country is beginning to not only notice, but root for, this team of hard nosed, loosey goosey, devil-may-care FIGHTING IOWA HAWKEYES.

Phoenix, AZ here

There are a TON of Hawkeye’s down here, it’s crazy. Lived here almost four years, go to the Sandbar for most game watches, and they are some of the best in the country. I have to go 2+ hours early just to get a table (which means getting there at 6:30am for early games).

I always wear my Hawk hat around, and always get someone saying something to me about the Hawks. Despite the blatant Pac-10 homerism, It’s a great place to be a Hawkeye, but then again where isn’t??

Just thought I’d shout in on this lovefest too- found the blog this season after moving out of IC and being starved for all the surrounding Hawkeye pride I was used to. Love BHGP of all the hawk sites on the net, you guys have it all – especially enjoyed all the posts this week.

My girlfriend and I felt like the only Hawk fans in the state of Montana, but have bumped into a few by showing our colors. We have also quickly converted a few locals down at Reds Bar into Hawk fans with our dedicated and enthusiastic weekly showings. Feels so good to carry the flag out here every Saturday. Loving it.

Hawkeye for life

I couldn’t agree more. I have a family member that lived in Iowa for 22 years before getting a job in New Jersey for the last 20 years. He is still an avid Hawkeye fan and has season tickets and flies back to 4-5 home games every year. The greatest story he has told me was after the Mich. State game when he went to a bar to watch it and he was going absolutely nuts wearing his Hawkeye gear with everyone else around him giving him blank stares. He said while calling me on the phone right after and I quote, “They can stare all they want because…Fuck them, we’re Iowa”!!

Moral of the story is, you grow up in Iowa and you are an Iowan for life. The values you gain growing up in Iowa stay with you and naturally you are a Hawkeye for Life!
