Wichita State Beats Iowa 74-57
And now the Hawkeyes are 1-4. Four more months of this before the NCAA tournament means we can enjoy college basketball again.
Actually, maybe we should just switch our coverage to Iona instead.
Whatever.

This is the state of Iowa Basketball
I went to The Vine to watch the game and they didn’t even know that Iowa was playing.

Silver Lining
We’re still tied for the lead in conference play for another couple weeks. But seriously, what’s the over-under on Iowa wins this year? I’m going with 3. Hopefully they can split with SC State, NC Central, Praire View A&M, & Tennesee State. I don’t see this team winning a single game in conference play. That would put this team at 3 wins and as I like to tell myself when the dealer pulls a bullshit 5 card 21 to ruin my double down, a push is a win. Ugh.
Fuck tOSU
Totally missed this game
I was driving home for Iowa City tonight, and didn’t even think to listen to it on the radio. I think I’m subconsciously protecting myself from the team. I’ve been offered tickets to ISU game, and I’m not even sure I want to go. I mean, I probably will, but I’m legitimately thinking about it, which makes me sad.
Ok Iowa, that's enough
You’re hurting everyone else’s strength of schedule.
Light a man a fire, he'll stay warm for a day.
Light a man afire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
after tonite live viewing
I assume the Hawkeye RPI is near a perfect 300 or so.
I think the kids want to play hard, but they’re in bad positions to rebound on both ends.
They run few if any post plays, and the defenders run thru any screens Iowa attemps to free Gatens/ Mays/ Payne for Lick_tastic 3pt shots.
I thought we could squeeze 10 or 12 wins out this year.
I’m pretty sure I’m wrong.
The guy behind me with a gold Notre Dame shirt asked why Iowa doesn’t box out & rebound better and then asked several times when the 5 was going to get some floor time.
I pointed at big #50 as our 5-man & that we don’t rebound well. He laughed & said “your going to have a long year.”
Yesh…I couldn not have agreed more.
this place smells like feet. i’ll bring a can of lysol next week.

In regards to rebounding
I don’t buy the whole “they’re trying hard” thing. They aren’t. No one on this team consistently boxes out, or follows their own shot. As soon as someone puts up one, the shooter and half the team immediately turn and start to head to the other end. Most of them don’t even consider the idea of trying to get an offensive rebound. It’s incredibly frustrating.
As the announcer asked
will this team become too demoralized? I think this will be an issue. I’m sure TL will say that he is building the team one phase at a time or some such thing (as an excuse for areas they are not showing progress in). But if they become too demoralized at the notion of even playing…
It’s shocking to me to see Gaten’s regression. He looks so frustrated out there. And Tucker looks like he is playing a pick-up game. Cully Payne though…is the man. I like that kid.
"I think it's safe to say our concerns are many." -- Kirk Ferentz
Screw the team...
…the fans are already demoralized, and they can choose not to go to the games. Think of all of the demoralized empty seats at Carver-Hawkeye that can’t even choose to miss a game because they’re bolted to the floor facing the court.
Screw the team?
All right, I can see you don’t want to be cheered up here, Dude.
I got more rhymes than Wade Lookingbill's got dunks
That is what makes me sad about May and Payne and Cougill.
They are playing hard (and well, given their level of experience) right now, but what’s going to happen when the losses keep mounting and things don’t seem to be improving?
I truly hope Gatens’ problem is just that he’s in a slump or that he’s pressing too hard to be the man this year… because if Lickliter could kill his love for Iowa basketball… well, that probably says everything you would need to know about the Todd Lickliter Era of Iowa hoops. Gatens has probably been obsessed with Iowa basketball since he could dribble a basketball.
Boxing out
That was the one aspect of their game that really pissed me off last year and it’s probably even worse this year. I understand that in most games our team doesn’t have the size or the athleticism to hang with other teams in the B10, but they should at least be able to show some fundamentals.
1. Box the fuck out. Seriously.
2. Learn to shoot FT consistently.
3. Stop turning the ball over, especially in the fucking back court. With this 50’s-style grandpa offense, you can’t turn the ball over 15-20 times.

I cannot fathom how we are such a poor free-throw shooting team.
How can a team that’s built around threes and jump shots be so bad at fucking free throws?
The lack of boxing out is also puzzling. Free throw shooting and competent rebounding techniques are fundamentals for, oh, pretty much every single successful basketball plan — so I’d think it’s in line with whatever the fuck Lickliter is trying to run.
I didn't know either
I used to be obsessed with Iowa hoops, obsessed, I tell you. I’d watch them live, then watch them again on tape, sometimes I’d watch a game from the previous year to “scout” the upcoming opponent. This feeling I have about the program now is not good. Alford may have broken my spirit, but Lickliter broke my heart. It’s ova.
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

Agreed.
I don’t think I ever loved Iowa hoops quite that much, but I was damn sure more interested in it than I am now. The Alford Era was frustrating, but at least he was able to string together enough successes to keep you interested and hoping for that proverbial corner to be turned. The Lickliter Era is just turning into non-stop apathy.
Yup
There was a time when I loved Iowa basketball way more than I ever did football. Like, it wasn’t even close. I grew up pretending to be Andre Woolridge and Jess Settles in my driveway. Now? I actually have tickets and I have to fight with myself to go to games. It’s sad.
Same here.
The ambivalence I feel is the wost part about it all, by far.

A few random thoughts
1. We are young (Pat Benatar just ran through my head) thus mistakes
2. If our uniforms get any longer they will drag on the floor.
3. TL must not teach proper use of screens because a Mack truck could get through the area, offensive player never I mean never rub off the screen.
4. An easy two every two times down the floor will get you more points than a 3 every four trips.
5. How about tearing a ref a new asshole every once in awhile when they blow a call. Texas mugged us no call an TL just clapped his hands. Show some passion and maybe the players will show some also. I don’t think you need to be Knight but damn man a T might have shown the players you were serious about winning that Texas game.
6. I use to check espn to see if Hawks were going to be on out here in Calif. but as others have said don’t know if I want to watch this group. Not kids fault I just don’t like TL system.
7. Team will win more than I think. If the threes are falling they could be deadly, if not they will get killed.
8. TL will most likely be back next year if no one leaves team. As stated they are young need to see what they look like in three years then decide what to do with TL. These could be a long three years.
9. Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and thank all of you for the laughter and joy and insight this site gives an Iowan living in Calif.
I for one am a HUGE fan of the Iona Gaels
Doesn’t Pete Gillen coach the Gaels now?
The only thing i can say about Iowa basketball right now is…..
‘Certainly Duke is Duke. They’re on tv more than Leave it to Beavah, reruns…’

over/under 10 wins?
I am waiting for Stoops My Ass to break down how awesome Coach Lick is again in some 3000 word post that would make any University of Iowa paid professional PR flack proud.
This program is in the worse shape of our lifetimes, Lick is in over his head, his system is awful and this team is just unwatchable. Also, I am not willing to make excuses for him in year 3 of his program like other Hawkeye fans. I would love to blame Steve Alford for this shitty product on the court but it is not his fault anymore.
I understand there actually might be some talent coming in next year but who the hell believes that Lick can make them competitive in a tough Big 10 conference?
Cut Bait, Fire this guy and go find the next Anthony Grant.
ps. The bad karma for running Dr. Tom in such an ahole way continues to haunt this program. Thanks Bowlsby.
"You taught me a lesson, I was going to give someone the benefit of doubt, and I almost did, then something said, no don't, don't, its not for you, its not my thing" Larry David,
I think Stoops is right in his analysis. The issue that is unresolved in many respects is what if they do show progress at some point from a wins/losses standpoint? Does attendance pick up considering the games will be in the 50s and 60s? Wins are fun, but the play may never be aesthetically pleasing compared to better big televen teams. I won’t watch wsconsin. Is that what we’ll be? If so, sold-outs in cha will be few. The AD can’t let this continue from a revenue standpoint.
I think Wisco has had pretty strong attendance, actually.
Winning cures a lot of ills. It probably wouldn’t bring back everyone, though.
I lived in California with Loyola Marymount had
Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers and they were scoring 100 points a night under Paul Westhead. Evryone wanted to see that team. But, after Westhead left for the Nuggets and Jay Hillock who was his lead assistant took over and kimble left for the pros…suddenly those 100 point wins turned to 100 losses. It was only mildly more fun to watch than Lickliter’s teams.
Bottom linie, losing is no fun to watch.

Bag of donuts
First, Cougill should lay off the snacks. Jesus.

Second, I just wish they’d win a few more so the BTN plays a few of their games out here in BFE Pennsylvania. I’d rather suffer than not watch them at all.

Skinny Cougill would make me sad
I mean, he would better if he lost weight, but he wouldn’t be nearly the unintentional comedy sensation that he is now. Laughing at Cougill’s surprisingly effective fat guy act is basically all I have left in this season.
Someone called it Lickball on another post
I also have been a lifelong fan of hawk hoops. That said, the only way to get Lickball out of IC is to stop watching. I can’t believe I’m saying that, but this is pathetic. Think we can get Lute back? While we are not a recruiting hotbed, we should be able to get some players, and keep them 4 years, be good for a year or two then rebuild. If a coach can’t keep his best players he needs to go. These kids are not leaving cause they love the coach and hate the school and fans. His style is BORING, BORING and BOREDOM. I can’t stand to watch. Hell, I’d rather watch a soap opera with my wiffe than watch this style of ball. Not to mention lose ugly every game. Hope next season has a new coach.
