Only 46 to go. Let’s run back a failed Minnesota triple reverse.

Every time I see him make the play on special teams and goal line situations—and it’s all him on those plays—I lament that his inability to crack the starting lineup may force him to transfer to anywhere that’ll have him. Dude can play. It’s just… so can Sash.

It not the vanilla play calls

If you know they are blitzing, there has to be something you can do. Roll out, draw, screen to Wegher, slant. Call something that has a chance of wokring against a cornerback blitz, not a play action pass witha running game that stinks.

It's a quirk of scheduling.

They had the dates come free when the NCAA switched to a 12-game season, since they had to reserve FSU and Auburn (respectively) for the last game—which used to be this week.

Now, if you want to say “yes but these teams are jokes,” of course they are; what team in their right mind would imperil their season by adding a lose-able game in the middle of November if they don’t have to?

Looking at the stats and Wegher had 15 carries for 26 yards.

by Kinnick Stadium is my Graceland on Nov 21, 2009 2:17 PM CST reply actions

It is weird...i read

that DJK leaves the huddle differently on a run as opposed to a pass. But Wegher himself has to be tipping it off. Although, is the Big Ten sharing it among themselves and somehow we are clueless? Seems unlikely. Wegher might be running too low and commmitting to early on the holes.

I’ve noticed that there’s a pretty definite trend in the way Wegher lines up and what the play call is. When he’s shallow in the backfield it’s a pass, when he’s deep, it’s a run.

I check cheddar like a food inspector

by SpanishJohnny on Nov 21, 2009 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

Never looks for the cut back, and until today we rarely threw

We also seem to run the same play for him; he always hits it off tackle on the stretch. A-Rob had some nice counter runs in the first half that we never seem to call for Wegher. Wegher might be better on draws than A-Rob, adn I like Wegher in the screen game, but we didn’t run any of those today. A couple of draws for A-Rob and one for or two for Wegher, but that was it. More draws might have slowed down the blitz they calle don every third down that we couldn’t exploit because we were running play action, 7 step drops.

My new theory, KOK is an idiot, and Stanzi was audibling out of these terrible calls.

by HAWKEYESBABY on Nov 21, 2009 3:18 PM CST up reply actions

Well, for starters...

1) It takes an enormous amount of luck and improbability to go undefeated.
2) As we saw just this season, injuries can totally derail an offense. Defenses are also susceptible.
3) No word yet on who’s transferring or going to the NFL early.
4) As this season demonstrated, even going undefeated isn’t a guarantor of BCS championship eligibility; the fact that Iowa’s toughest road game is at Arizona in September won’t help their cause.
5) The returning talent level isn’t quite at the elite level just yet.
6) Most importantly, the mere notion that we can “demand” a national title from ANY team, not just Iowa, is among the most odious and obnoxious of fan behavior. If you’re going to piss and moan if Iowa goes 10-2 or 11-1, then you don’t really get what’s so fun about football and you’re just using it as an outlet for your ugliest impulses.

It’s fine to go into 2010 thinking that Iowa’s one of the contenders for a BCS bowl. It’s neither productive nor enjoyable to turn it into a “demand” for a title, especially when we’re talking about 18- to 22-year-olds playing sports. In fact, it’s fucking ridiculous. Use your head, man.

Not happy SDSU was able to score more points against Minny...

…than us. Strangely, I almost felt better after our loss against OSU than after this one.

BUT, two straight shutouts against the LOLphers feels great. Our O-line was, um, not very good today, and VBerg certainly didn’t impress like he did last week.

BUT, our D was phenomenal and was doubly phenomenal when it really mattered.

Bottom line, we won, we’re 10-2, and we’re hopefully on our way to a BSC game. Hoping for an Okie State loss against OU next week and an Oregon loss against either Arizona today or Oregon State next week. Would be nice to see Wisky or PSU lose (sorry, PSU fans, nothing personal; go to hell, Wisky fans) as well so the idiot Big 12 coaches can’t justifiably rank either of them higher than us.

All in all, it’s been a strange, exciting, gut-wrenching season, and I’m glad we were able to end on a high note. After all we’ve been through this year, the close score probably shouldn’t surprise me at all. Hope A-Rob gets better in time for the bowl game, wherever it may be. Stanzi and the rest of the injured players too, for that matter.

Great season, Hawks! Let’s cap it off by smacking someone around in Phoenix or Miami.

One Word: Oklahoma

A season can change in a blink. Expecting or demanding a championship in college football is idiotic. We are good, and we can expect this team to compete at the highest levels next year. But expecting – much less demanding – a national championship in college football is just stupid. It’s an incredibly competitive sport with frequent injuries.

by stewartom on Nov 21, 2009 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

I don't buy it

Of course, injuries happen. If Tebow breaks a leg, I don’t think Florida fans expect to win a national title. But that doesn’t change their expectations. Perhaps demand was too strong a word. All I meant was that we need to have higher expectations—higher than even a BCS bid.

Tough to argue that, but also tough to fully agree -

We’ve never fielded a complete, healthy offense the entire season. Not even counting Hampton – there’s been a key role-player out for every game. By the time the bowl comes around, we should (ugh, dear god please) have everyone healthy, and will have had some good time to heal and get good reps & prep. With the offense we’re actually supposed to have out there, we could be a freaking juggernaut. But to be fair, I did use an awful lot of modals there, so you know, no guarntees or whatever.

No, no, no.

If Dace gets one, it’ll be for 2008, where he sat out the entire season. He played more than half of this season before the injury.

18 at Arizona
25 Ball State

October
2 Penn State (HC)
9 Bye week
16 at Michigan

Why does this program continue to schedule 1-AA teams???

schedule a C-USA or some other small conference team, but 1-AA teams kill BCS rankings.

I mentioned this earlier but given the recent discussion I'll post it again

My friend works at U of I hospitals with someone who knows an assistant coach (that part is true—the coach is his neighbor—but whether he was told the following can be qualified as rumor). Anyway, he told my buddy that Jewel Hampton will be number one the depth chart—which makes sense given KF loyalty to players (he gave Paki his shot after all). Arob and Brinson would be 2-3 respectively though they would split carries; the best back would assume the number 2 position. The major thing would be that Wegher would move to back up Greenwood as free safety.

by KenOKeefeIfuckinghateyou on Nov 21, 2009 3:51 PM CST reply actions

Hmmm.

If he’d be good at safety, then I’m all for the move. No offense to Joe Conklin, but, y’know.

It does bum me out a bit that they’d give up on putting the ball in his hands; once he gets past the point of attack, he’s dynamic. Oh well. Hope he still returns kicks and punts or something.

by pfac51 on Nov 21, 2009 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Again, the friend's co-worker is a lot like Dwight from the Office

so I definitely don’t stand by his statement. Though Wegher has speed and ball skills that would seem to fit the free safety position. But who knows who transfers and with injuries (like you said), it’s pure speculation.

by KenOKeefeIfuckinghateyou on Nov 21, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with Hampton/Brinson

I would have guessed ARob back to D and Wegher as some sort of flanker/scat back etc. But the coaches know more than I do.

by Ratface McDougal on Nov 21, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think ARob has earned his spot in the RB corps,

splitting carries w/Brinson, most likely. I’d like to see BW move to the slot if he stas on O.

by Bucketochicken on Nov 21, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

I think ARob has earned playing time

But, barring injury, I don’t seem him getting a lot of carries behind Hampton/Brinson. Given how he picks up blockers, blowing up WR and TEs in the middle? I like that a lot.

by Ratface McDougal on Nov 21, 2009 4:02 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

I like ARob’s ability to break tackles.

by KenOKeefeIfuckinghateyou on Nov 21, 2009 4:03 PM CST up reply actions

That would be a more logical position for Wegher

In the open field, he’s amazing. Get him in a spot where he can have 1-1 matchups and let him brake ankles.

I’m sure, though, that if the coaches told him he was moving to safety that he would transfer.

Hopefully Seantrel Henderson and CJ Fiedlsdfjlksdfjlkf34sdski have enjoyed their time in IC so far

Given that we’ll have large, porn star-like gaping holes to either fill or replace on the line and at TE, it’d be nice to get some of the nation’s best seniors in to start fucking some shit up.
