Leaving the U of I hospitals with Mom,I sat down next to Coach Parker, while waiting on our vehicles. I noticed the cast on the coach's leg. I jokingly asked if one of the players had rolled up on him at practice. He told me he had to have surgery to remove a toe because of diabetic complications. I know of the potential problems with diabetes, as one of my sons is diabetic. I told the coach I was sorry to hear that. He said the "guys" back at the office were not as sympathetic, in fact said to him, "Way to take one for the team." He went on to explain that he had a similar surgery on his other foot some years back and that year, 2004, they were co-champs in the Big Ten. I wished him the best of luck for this season. As I drove away, I started to think about the possibilities of this tip, Bet the House on another championship..., worse yet, 8 more toes...? Bend but don't break, Norm! GO Hawks!!
