24-21: HOLY CRAP WE ACTUALLY DID IT

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!! Iowa comes through with the sensational, shocking win by the count of 24-21! Nobody gave Iowa a chance, like usual. But for the steady, reasonable, consistent leadership of Ricky Stanzi, we'd all be lost--as would be the season.

Celebrate with your pants off, people. We've never been this happy about a football win ever. As history dictates, we dance and we get naked.

I’ve been telling my gf that I’m more worried about Arkansas State than I am Michigan. We got the win, that’s all that matters.

Let us dance!

Linebackers were also really bad in coverage this week

The d-line did play well though

The offensive line, on the other hand, struggled a lot with run blocking. Wegher and Robinson were getting hit in the backfield way too often.

I wouldn't say really bad.

They weren’t great, but I don’t think you can pin ASU’s prolonged drives on the LBs as much as, say, Willie Lowe.

I would be willing to bet that ESPN didn’t “choose” to air this game and let BTN have Mich/Mich St. I’m pretty sure BTN gets first pick a couple times a year… this must have been one of those weeks, because no way does ESPN choose this game over Mich/Mich St.

It’s not like they did anything new. Northwestern has been exploiting it forever. If you’re patient enough to throw underneath the cover-2, you can move the ball against this defense.

It should be pointed out in this discussion

that the defense only gave up 14 points today, despite all the slants and such.

Consistency on offense is just killing this team right now, and it needs to improve rapidly, because there are teams remaining on our schedule that could score more than 14 and hold our offense to less than that.

If we had established a consistent and reliable ground game, and if Stanzi had stopped throwing to the defense side on slants, this would have been a much different game.

by fossilhawk on Oct 3, 2009 3:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

of note on the stanzi INT for th TD

It was deep enough into ASU territory that it counted as at least a 10 point swing. We also left three on the board with a Murray miss (which should have been a TD drive anyway). McNutt missed pass interference call stopped a drive. And we had a drive stall on the three when Stanzi tried to run it in. double digit points worth of opportunities missed today. Can’t do that against big ten teams.

relating to the Iowa game. Donahue needs to win special teams player of the week this week. He didn’t do much in this game I realize BUT…during warm ups at half time he managed to land a 60 yard punt SQUARELY on the head of one of the elderly Per Mar security guards lining the endzone who was not paying any sort of attention. He was a little shaken up but he never feel down and remained on the sideline for the rest of the game. Which is great to see.

Pitt maybe?

Another Navy miracle?

Actually… Stanford appears to have a pretty salty team this year, too. I’m not sure where that game is, though – if it’s in Palo Alto, I could definitely see them winning that one.

I still think you'll beat UM

Solely because MSU’s defense mostly contained them most of the game, and Iowa has a better defense.

Also, you can pass on that terrible secondary.

for the half that Stanzi had his head on straight

we almost lost to fucking Arkansas State because Stanzi’s shit kept us from exploiting their big weakness (passing D).

by shake n bake on Oct 3, 2009 6:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

True

But that requires playcalling that utilizes that fact. We had the ability to eat up Arky State on the edges today but didn’t seem to exploit that strength enough.

Someone please shut Lou Houltz up....

he just claim ND is one of the top 5 offenses in the country. Mark May looks incredulous. He just threatened to shoot Mark.

This game (Iowa) was not what I had in mind

and the team did not look at all defensively like can and should. Now, Michigan is a much easier team to defend than this team from a scheme standpoint, because they cannot pass as well as Ark St. The games that worries me after seing this week’s performance is Wisky and to a lesser degree Mich St. I have OSU down as an L. I’m hoping Bulaga and the line improve this week at practice beause thy did not do very well run blocking. Also, I hope Moeaki coming back opens a few things up. FInally, Prater…is huge. Lowe can do nickle but he cannot cover one-on-one.

Yes but...

their defense could very well out score our offense. With the way we seem to spot teams TDs…..

by Argulor on Oct 3, 2009 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure

But Stanzi against that defense? Ouch. If he doesn’t improve over the next few weeks, we spot them 7-14 for sure.

And as well as we have played in Happy Valley over the years, Columbus is the exact opposite. Just a horrorshow.

Tangent: Blackout Game Shamockery

In a stunning development that only an Iranian Parliamentary official, Florida resident, or possibly an International Olympic Committee member could appreciate: Next week’s game is a blackout despite the will of Iowa fans, and generally the American people.

is it too late to recruite OUs backup quarterback?

by txhawkeye on Oct 3, 2009 7:23 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Alright, gents

I can’t do anymore college football (I know). I’m off to watch Season 1 of Sons of Anarchy on DVD now. A few hours of bikers, meth, and guns should help me forget the game today, amirite?

A win at the shoe is...frankly

maybe asking too much of this team. But, one loss might do it if OSU loses to PSU and one of the other teams pulls a home shocker against the buckeyes…or, they drop football in the next five weeks?

there are budgetary concerns.

Football is reallly expensive for an athletic dep’t to maintain. Anybody got Gene Smith’s office number?

I'd like to thank the WWL

for giving the gameball to

Ricky Stanzi. The Iowa QB threw for three TDs and a season-high 296 yards to lead the Hawkeyes.

Could you mention the pick 6 that put the game in jeopardy, too?

I’m just bitter, the good throws were great. The bad ones are going to kill us against a better opponent

Poor Marvin McNutt

121 yards, two TDs, recovering an onside kick…what more does that dude have to do to be player of the game?

by NorseHawk on Oct 3, 2009 8:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he could come up with an easily....

harvestible means for creating clean-energy hydrogen fusion without undue infrastructure commitments or decades of light-year scientific advancements I’d consider it.

Alright. I’ll give it to him for his receiving yards. Plus he’s #7. Always liked #7’s,

If it's not too much trouble, search your soul--and then ask yourself if maybe I might have a point.

Interesting

I went back to check out the recaps of the late game and lo

Marvin McNutt. Iowa’s sophomore WR hooked up with quarterback Ricky Stanzi for two scores and finished with four catches for 121 yards.

So they took the ball from Stanzi and gave it to McNutt. While they made the right choice (eventually), I wonder what made them change

We've been hearing that for at least 3 weeks now

and it hasn’t come back to bite the Hawks yet. Bad Ricky showed up against ISU, and Iowa won by 32. Bad Ricky showed up against AZ, and that game was never in doubt.

Iowa played like shit today, and still won the game. The 2002 team was like that up until the midpoint of the season, then they started blowing people away. 2004 was the same way – with the exception of the Minnesota game. While this team seems to be more like the 2003 team, they’re showing the same tenacity that we all saw in 2004.

Having Bulaga and Moeaki both in practice this week can only be a good thing, and when Michigan brings their all-white uniforms to Kinnick next week, they’ll figure that out.

Michigan

with 28 yards rushing this week…can we please knock them into oblivion?

Shit, if MSU and their swiss-cheese defense

can do that to Michigan’s running game, imagine what an Iowa defense that actually gives a shit might do to it. Of course, that means that Forcier was ripping apart the MSU secondary, but he’ll be in the hospital by halftime.

Right?

Clayborn and Ballard will not be pleased after they read the boards this week.

Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

Is it just me or does Landshark stadium suck

And I mean suck in ways stadiums have never sucked before. It looks stupid from the blimp, square and shit and the fans are 100 ft from the field.

anyway, not that this has anything to do with anything.

oh yeah, I also hate miami and their thug life style.

"What does 'U-SWAG' mean, Jacory?"

“Aw you know, it means U-SWAG. That’s what we gotta have.”

(mildly stunned silence from on-field reporter lady)

“Thank you, Jacory. Good game.”
