BLOGLIVEOPENTHREADGAME 3.0: STILL UNDEFEATED
It wasn't pretty, and it looked a little dicey at the break. But then it was the second half, and Iowa kills people in the second half.
Let us gather our thoughts, watch Ohio State try to lose a slapfight with Purdue, and comment here.
Also, suck it, Bielema.

Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.
Now there's some appropriate field rushing
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
Are people seriously upset that we rushed the field in that game?
We’ve beaten Michigan like ten times ever, that game was awesome, and it was the end to a awesome day. Plus, rushing the field is always fun, and the team seemed to love it
I just feel one thing is necessary for a field rush...
You shouldn’t be favored to win. Iowa is a much better team than Michigan. The game shouldn’t have been that close…save the rush for Minnesota if we keep on rolling.
Yes, because nothing says shocker like beating the Gophers.

I was thinking mainly the clinching of a B10 championship....
extenuating circumstances. But I’m getting ahead of my MSU next week.
Meh, whatever
It was mostly college kids having fun. Sports are supposed to be fun, man.
I'm with Arg.
Rushing the field was dumb. It’s justifiable, but still dumb. 10 win streak, 6-0, rare win over Michigan, but still dumb. Iowa was favored, and should have expected to win.
by The Mexican't on Oct 17, 2009 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Eh, I say let the fans have fun.
If you don’t want to rush the field, you don’t have to.
I got more rhymes than Wade Lookingbill's got dunks
I can understand this argument, as well.
I’ve been on the field at Kinnick no less than 4 times, and only a couple were justifiable. Iowa-Michigan ‘03 and last year’s Penn State game are the only times I had enough reason to be on the field. But every time was a blasty.

not seriously upset, but I was a bit embarassed
kind of an “act like you’ve been there before” type thing. Yeah their Michigan, but Iowa was a top 15 ranked team and they were unranked.

Who cares?
It was an exciting win, people were excited. The team loved it.
I was an hour late so had to go the DVR, never got caught up. I have several thoughts, but first, fuck you, Bob Griese. What is that should be 3-3 fucking bullshit? Fuck you. What a shitbag.
Second, other than his fumble, boy did Stanzi manage that game. I’m not exactly stunned we won, but it looked lousy in the first 1/2. Sorry to digress from tOSU laughathon. Oh, and we don’t play Purdue this year.
The fumble was totally his fault. He had 2 rushers come right in his face (LOL).
But yes, he played very well other than that.
Perhaps my best years are gone. When there was a chance of happiness. But I wouldn't want them back. Not with the fire in me now. No, I wouldn't want them back.

And Stanzi continues to have short term memory...
Right after that fumble he puts it behinds him an leads the team on a couple great drives.
I turned to mom after that fumble and said
“That is the closest to a Stanziball they will have all day.”. Turned out to be right. Maybe he’s finally toughening up mentally.

Nah. If both teams win out, Iowa still probably jumps USC after winning at OSU.
I got more rhymes than Wade Lookingbill's got dunks
12-0 Iowa only jumps USC in the computers.
We’d be begging the human polls to have a lil sense. Iowa will need a strong victory in Columbus to convince the human voters that we’re on par with the So Cal Trojans.
by The Mexican't on Oct 17, 2009 2:28 PM CDT up reply actions
You think so?
I think humans will see an undefeated team and start rewarding them accordingly once we get to week 11 or so.
I got more rhymes than Wade Lookingbill's got dunks
If Iowa keeps "winning ugly" I think USC will steal some votes
Of course, that’s assuming they run the table. If Oregon finds a way, there’s not really any question. A 12-0 BigTen team should ALWAYS play for the MNC. I don’t care what the media thinks, running the table in the BigTen is an incredible feat.

That assumes
Bulaga and Spievey both come back. If they do, with the return of Bernstine and Hampton, Iowa should be a clear favorite for the national title. If not, well then hopefully we can win the Big TeleveN
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
Bulaga is coming back. He hasn't been All Big 10, let alone a first round pick.
Spievey has been good, but hasn’t done anything “flashy” enough to warrant a first round pick either. I suspect he’ll be back as well.

Although I suppose I thought that after the first half of their last game too. On one hand, Nebraska losing is always hilarious. On the other, I really want the Ndamukong Suh Heisman bandwagon to take off, because he’s definitely the best player in the country this year. He’s 6th in the country in pass breakups. As a DT!
Don't worry..
it’s a blowout. Nebraska should be with two losses but today their hubris is kaput.

What will it take
For Weis to get the boot? Honestly.

Why would you want that
they could be good again if somebody else is there

True.
Purely hypothetical. But, I think ND being good actually plays in Iowa’s favor most of the time.

In "every game you will have a decided schematic advantage"
Or, not so much. Maybe Weis is just an overrated fat fuck who can’t coach.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
But but but but
They totally nearly beat USC once!

As a fellow fatty...
I ask that we just concentrate on Weis’s lack of coaching ability and ineptness on the big stage.
There have been several overweight-to-fat coaches that are pretty good. Parcells, Homgren, maybe Andy Reid, Tiller, etc.

they're going to put a second back on the clock?
looks like the right call actually
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
We can all agree to that.

Does ND know the game lasts only 4 quarters?

ok, I was rooting for ND
but I can enjoy them losing on an epic fail by Clausen. Had an open WR in the endzone, no pressure coming and he flat missed him.

The pic of him slamming his mouthpiece into the turf is FANTASTIC.
As is him angrily slapping at the USC guy’s hand when he tries to congratulate him on a gopd game.
Hooray for sportsmanship!

No, I was loving her opening question to Charlie Chalupa “How are you feeling?” (obvious answer: hungry) and then as he walks away like a bloated zombie she says “Charlie Weis has never beaten USC…” with him still in ear shot.
Loved it.

Georgia Tech
Wants to clear a spot for us in the top 10.

Thankfully
We’ve done enough since that I no longer feel like I have to try to justify that game. Because the whole “GREATEST I-AA TEAM EVAR” thing doesn’t work so well now.
Yeah, I think our road wins over PSU and Wisco tell our story pretty well.
Plus the win over Michigan (even if they still aren’t Michigan yet.)
But I did think UNI looked like a very good team, both against us and in subsequent games against I-AA teams. Anyone know how many games they can lose and still make the playoffs?
A lot depends...
on how the other teams in the Missouri Valley Football Conference do. Right now, SIU and SDSU are ahead of UNI in that conference.
There are 32 spots now in the FCS playoffs, and 14 conferences. So, that leaves 18 at-large berths. Unless UNI really goes to hell, they should, at worst, slip in in one of the last few of those 18.
UNI has two losses right now (including the Iowa one, which the tourney people will probably ignore or use in UNI’s favor). So, UNI can probably lose one more game and still get in. 2 or more losses after today, and it gets dicey.

Cheers.
Hopefully this is a bump in the road for UNI. I am rooting for them to make a run at the I-AA title.
Thanks, Ross.
But, if UNI can’t beat SIU in the dome, then I’m not sure I see how they can make a long run in the playoffs, (which, with today’s loss) they will now have to play some playoffs on the road.
To ChiTown: that is the only explanation that is worth a darn. However, the fact that it was in such weird fashion (a one point win despite two FG tries by the other team) means that they will be reminding us of this for at least a year or two. That win against UNI was about as close to the Mich-App State scenario as we have recently seen or will see for awhile in Iowa.

How many times did they bring it up?
We will hear about this game until the bowl game is done. I think the only thing we can say about it that will shut anybody up is that this team has issues, but we’re getting better.
And that answer won’t work.

ISU playing well again. 14-3, half.
They’re going to be a lot tougher for a long time. I think Rhoads is their Ferentz.
Mr. Boh Knows ...
yeah but Baylor
And Baylor without their one good player at that.
Yes I know, i am your ex-wife. But, seriously: Baylor.
Baylor hasn't been close to relevant since '74
They lost by 30 to Penn State in the Cotton Bowl.
And that was that.

Did I call today's game correctly? Or not?
ISU is good. Baylor is decent. I have a whole bunch of braised chicken parts simmering in chardonnay, sliced grapes, and shallots, so must close. You have to admit, today was fun.
Mr. Boh Knows ...
But what about next week? Already nervous. On the other hand, I have a nice Nord open, ND lost, VTech lost, and tOSU lost. Damn FL, they’ll get kudos for winning close, and it’s pissing me off.
I'll be nervous about that later
Right now, I just know that today owned, and that’s all that matters.
I'm right there with you dude
If MSU had lost, I thought we’d win in a walk, MSU would be in full melt-down mode. But the win puts them in the “let’s redeem the season” mode, and know they may be the (semi) dangerous team they were predicted to be at the beginning of the season.
I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.
I went to Baylor's
last bowl win (and they have only been to and lost one other bowl since then). It was the Sun Bowl at the end of the 1992 season. Baylor beat Arizona on a cold and rainy day.
Maybe that doesn’t count as relevant, but it is another bowl game in my drawer of memories.
