Some thoughts after the Michigan game

In full disclosure, I'm pretty drunk when I type this

1. The STANZIBALL per game needs to stop.  NOW.  One of these days, our defense isn't going to be able to bail Stanzi out.  I don't care if Stanzi only completes 30% of his passes, as long as one isn't to the other team for 6, I'll take it.

2. Who'd of thought, Vandevelde is actually the answer at guard.  I love Reiff, but he wasn't getting it. done.

3. DJK is our best receiver.  I don't care if he has carnal knowledge of Ferentz's daughter on the 50-yard line during practice, he needs to be in the game.  Quite simply, he makes catches no one else does and bails us out of situations that we have no business being saved from.

4. This team is going to give me about eleventy billion heart attacks before the end of the season.

5. We are 10x better with Moeaki than we are without.  If only Mr. Glass could stay healthy for the rest of the season.

6. Greenwood has finally arrived. It was forever and day coming, but he has finally learned how to not get killed in coverage.  This is a good thing, and one I am happy to say I was wrong about.

7. Everyone of our back 7 except for Spievey now has an interception.  This is a good thing.

Whatever, we're now 6-0! It's been a rollercoaster of a season, and promises only to be more so until the end of the year.  I don't yet believe, but dear Lord, I want to.

Didn't Vandevelde alternate at right guard with Dace,

not left guard with Rieff?

This offense only clicks if you can block down and then release a TE — it was ridiculous how Michigan sold out v. the run, and they were 8-9 guys in the box. But I guess this is what we will see until the Stanzi balls stop coming; he’ll have to prove it each game.

TE flag route was wide open for entire 1st half

I’m talking WIDE open. Throw a flag, streak, or quick fade to the TE and it would have been a guaranteed 30 yards each time.

Michigan’s alignment had 8 in the box, with the FS playing short as well (everyone was within 7 yds of the LOS!!) and nothing but a linebacker between Moeaki and the endzone. If I were Iowa I’d have run passes to the TE opposite the FS all night, until Michigan was forced to put two safeties back and loosened up their LBs. Instead we tried to run out of a 2 TE set all night. And always, always ran to the strong side.

I think Bellanca is correct

I saw Reiff out there last night still

They were alternating series

From what I saw, a series with Dace at LG and Vandevelde at RG, a series with Reiff at LG and Dace at RG, but I was drunk.

I don't yet believe, but dear Lord, I want to.

That’s the perfect way to describe where I’m at with this Iowa team. Man is there a lot to like going on out there, and man have they already had some magic moments this season.

But still, with 6 games to play, and I can just as easily talk myself into 9-3 and another Outback Bowl as I can into 11-1 and me ringing in the New Year in California.

But cripes if this team ever puts it together for four quarters on offense…

If only Spievey hadn't bobbled that INT

I forgot to pay attention to O-line personnel later in the game. I saw Vandervelde back in at RG, but didn’t look to see who was at LG in that series.

Spievey nearly had one twice

the bobble and one that the WR just snatched away from him on a jump ball.

Just for the record

The defense didn’t bail out Stanzi this time. He threw a pick 6, then marched right down the field to tie it up himself. From there it was a 0-0 game with the defense never having seen the field. It wasn’t always pretty, but our offense is definitely headed in the right direction.

Here, we disagree

“I don’t care if Stanzi only completes 30% of his passes, as long as one isn’t to the other team for 6, I’ll take it.”

No. If Stanzi completes 30% of his passes Saturday night, Iowa likely loses.
