Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I'd Like to Thank You All For Nothing At All

This is extremely off-topic but seeing as I know that many of the head-honchos of this site are big supporters of Wilco, I'd like to encourage anyone reading to scoop up the remaining tickets for the concert of said band tomorrow night (Thursday, that is) at the IMU Main Lounge. Wilco is really a "big-tent" band, appealing to people of all kinds of musical tastes and age groups. It's the band that the hipster-douche bag and dumbass bro in the DMB t-shirt can both appreciate. Lots of old dudes will also be present.

Star-divide

This phenomena occurs mainly because Wilco is fucking good. This will be my third time seeing the band (I saw lead-singer Jeff Tweedy solo once as well) and every concert has been a face-fuck of  ripping guitar solos and raw energy. This summer I had the pleasure of seeing Wilco in Wilmington, Del., and I've never seen a tighter act. Every single musician in the band is a consummate pro, they are just damn good at their instruments. At the same time, they still maintain a level of energy as good as any rowdy act at the Picador. As performers, the band is as good as ever, and whether or not you like the newer material, they always play songs from almost every album.

So go.

Thank you for wasting my time.

I clicked this hoping it was Iowa, Big 10, or at least sports related.
I like the band but go find a Wilco blog.

I love you man.

I just had to harp on you since I jumped all over Chazz the other day for his posts about totally unrelated Cubs bullshit. I just don’t want this to turn from a good all Hawk-stuff blog into a grocery store bulletin board. Some of the SBNation sites basically have people selling their kids’ girl-scout cookies and magazine subscriptions. Very annoying. It’s just one of those things that gets under my skin. No offense, I realize that’s way different than what you did. I like Wilco too, and obviously there was interest in the posting so…whatever. I’m sorry though, I just re-read my post and really sounded like a dick and I didn’t intend to be such an ass.

wond3RBoy still > white lightening.

They're playing in IC tonight

That’s not Iowa related?

No more Gabe's???

It has been a fuck long time since i’ve been to IC but Gabe’s is no more?
Hopefully this picador place is still like hanging out in a run down rat hole that smells like stale Old Style and raccoon urine and allows 19 year olds to drink BUT probably not.

It is is the dame place, I've heard it's much, much nicer now.

Like, clean(er) bathrooms and everything. Which is great, but also really a bummer, you know? I always liked Gabe’s seedy filthy charm.

I love Gabes

Saw my first show there 10 years ago this month. The Urge and P.O.D. before they were famous.

Why don't i date myself some more?

Excuse me while i reminisce for a second. So many awesome shows at Gabe’s. One of my faves was The Meat Puppets, Bob Mould solo show, The Dead Milkmen, Southern Culture on the Skids and many others i’m sure i can’t even start to remember.
How ’bout IC faves Head Candy and Trip Shakespeare? Not all that great but they were there every other weekend. Or the fucking Dangtrippers, anyone remember that somewhat not awesome band?
Also i did see PHISH at the IMU in ’93 i think. Needless to say i was completely fucked out of my head for that one and enjoyed every minute of it. Alright no more trips down memory lane for me. Back to football.
GO HAWKEYES!

FUCK how could i forget HOLS?

I must have seen them like 20 times by the time i left IC.

Wow

I think it was on like a Tuesday night, too. Well done dude.

The renovations have actually been great for Gabe's. (I refuse to acknowledge it's new name)

The rundown vibe was nice, but the floor was ready to fall thru, and the renovations mean quality bands are more willing to make the stop. It’s a much better change than the new Sam’s Pizza.

The original Sam’s Pizza was quality bar and drunken pizza location, whereas the new Sam’s is basically a local sports bar. I understand why they made the changes, but it’s still a giant bummer. Luckily, the calzones are still tremendous.

True, very true.

In this case, the upside has more upside than the downside.

Wait, what?

by Bucketochicken on Oct 1, 2009 10:22 AM CDT up reply actions

MMMMM' Sam's Calzones

I haven’t thought about a Sam’s Calzone in years but because of that one mention of it i will not be able to forget until i have one. DAMN this material space betwixt me and Iowa City!
One other quick thing. I just can’t picture myself being pleased with any kind of “Gabe’s” renovations. First you can’t smoke in Gabe’s then they change that shit up? There was such a unique smell every time one walked inside from the beer garden.
OhMyGod do they still have a beer garden? Anyone here old enough to remember quarter draws at Gabe’s on Tuesdays? Does anyone remember my 20th birthday where i got totally ripped in Gabe’s beer garden. Made out with my girlfriend at the time for like 10 minutes committing a huge PDA before i left and then totally barfed all over Currier’s 4th floor bathroom? That was FUCK AWESOME!

by HawkeyePapyrus on Oct 1, 2009 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

They still do have a sweet beer garden.

Cannot wait for this show

Hurry up and get here 7 o’clock.

Really jealous that you got too see Tweedy solo. I would almost rather see that than the full band.

by NorseHawk on Oct 1, 2009 12:36 PM CDT reply actions

Tweedy solo was amazing. It was in the upstairs ballroom in the IMU (not the one the show’s in tonight), and it was just pitch black and dead silent. It was a really powerful show. He played a bunch of Mermaid Ave. stuff as well.

I've got a bunch of bootlegged ones, and they're all amazing

I love his acoustic arrangements of the Wilco songs, the smaller venues are a nice fit, and he plays a ton of their more obscure songs (like stuff from Mermaid Avenue) as well as lots of old Uncle Tupelo songs. I’ve already seen Wilco once, so Tweedy solo is the one show I want to see more than other.

by NorseHawk on Oct 1, 2009 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey, I was at that Wilmington show.

And did not throw celery onto the stage, though one of our BSD readers did.

(Also saw Tweedy solo in New Orleans a few years ago, which rocked in ways not previously known to man.)

Ha, that’s nuts! I remember those celery people very clearly. What a great show.

Show was amazing

Band sounded great, they played forever, and the set-list was awesome (loved the AM stuff in the second encore!). Best show I’ve been too since at least the last Wilco show I saw. Best band in the world.

by NorseHawk on Oct 2, 2009 7:19 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah the second encore was killer. I was hoping for some older stuff and they came through in a big way with some of my favorite early rockers. Here’s the set list for anyone interested:
