The Long Goodbye?

[Muy bumpido! I don't know Spanish.--OPS]

Will we ever see Anthony Tucker play for the Hawks again? I am conflicted on Lick's approach here--assuming I even understand it.

Clearly, coaches are going to do what they need to do to get their players, indeed their team, to mind their Ps & Qs (yes, and the J&B--Truman Capote's drink of choice by the way); but, am I alone here? I don't understand playing Tucker signifcant minutes at Drake, then DNP-coaches decision, then one minute of court time at Ohio State, and now the end of the bench.

Is this the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning? If he doesn't see the court soon I think he is out of here. I just don't know if it will be his choice or Lick's.

By the way, how many games did Dan Bohall go into purgatory with Lick after his binger last year? Is that the standard?

I don't want to resurrect the whole issue. I just don't get the methodology of the punishment here, unless it isn't punishment anymore.

From HawkMania

On Anthony Tucker’s status: "The situation is a coach’s decision. Anthony wasn’t just suspended. He was under the weather, missed practices, lost some strength. He’s kind of been recovering from that. It’s not like we’ve played bad basketball in his absence. Devan Bawinkel has filled in, Jermain Davis has stepped up. His minutes have been limited because of that. He’s continued to work hard in practice and he’s available for us.’’

On if he has learned his lesson: "Yeah, that’s behind us. He’s very bright, a team guy. I have no problem with Anthony. We can’t change things that have happened, but we can learn from them. He’s been a good teammate and we’re happy he’s with us at the University of Iowa.’’

Lick Speak

I don’t think I have enough of a gauge on Lick to read between the lines on this, but since a lack of justifable basis has never stopped me in the past…

It seems like Tucker shouldn’t expect a lot of playing time in the near future. It was clear that he got the PT during Drake because Lick was desperate to try and save the game. It would seem that trend is going to continue until a similar situation presents itself or Tucker plays his way out of the Coaches dog house. However, one has to wonder what it will take to accomplish the latter. Obviously his performance at Drake didn’t do the trick.

He quit

I think they were trying to get rid of him anyway though. He wasn’t going to play much this year, if at all.

He's Still Sick

Apparently has mono. Fatigue is a big issue for him right now. Also the guys ahead of him have played well in his absence, so there are 5 guard ahead of him on the list. JPete, Gatens, Davis, Bawinkel, and Kelly all stepped up when he was out (for illness and drinking). He has to get healthy and then try to work back into the rotation.

AT isn’t going anywhere.

This makes sense

if it’s true. That kids J is pure butter. He was head and shoulders better than everyone else. If he has mono, this all makes sense. If he doesn’t then….

Gatens is legit

That kid rarely has a stupid play. And by rarely, I mean one every two or three games. He is confident, knowledgeable about the game, and knows where to be in the offense at all times. He never takes a bad shot, almost never forces anything, and is one of the headiest players I’ve ever seen as a Frosh. I can’t wait to see him as a front-line scoring option.

Gatens is much better than I expected

Sure we saw him do well in high school, but I didn’t expect him to be this good. He has a legit shot at frosh of the year in the Big Ten.

Mono

one of many things you could catch passed out in a snowbank behind a bar in December.

At least I got mine from a skanky chick who could suck the seeds out of a watermelon.

He was sick before the drinking incident

Which makes the drinking incident even more confusing.

Ehhh, I had mono and I still drank to excess.

Actually I got it as an adult. We had our second child 9 months later. heh heh heh.

(get it? Get it?!!? LOL!! LOL!!)

Concerns...

You know, this whole Tucker thing is uncomfortably close in form to the way that Alford handled matters. What’s the big deal in telling the media why the kid isn’t playing? All he had to say was, he’s been ill and is trying to get his legs back.

I like this guy Lickliter and I am sold on his system for the long haul. We just aren’t going to be able to recruit the big trees and post people up at Iowa, so this system makes good sense for us. BUT, I really had deja vu watching that Indiana game. We had two points off the bench. Lickliter strangled the mintues to only six guys (an old Alford trick, once the season got going there was suddenly no bench and now it appears Aaron Fuller is also getting squeezed out of minutes). Meanwhile, Tucker is sitting there on the bench, apparently too sick to play but not too sick to dress for the game.

Bottom line, if the kid is sick, then I guess we’ll just have to roll with the approach here. But, if he is merely not in top form, then please, he is the best shooter on the team and was our leading scorer until he got sick. He may not be able to provide Kevin Boyle defense (there’s a blast from the past!) but is he so frail and fragile he cannot take the court for 10 minutes even?

Whatever. We are still a .500 or a little better team this year and 20 wins would be coach of the year at this point. I’ll just hope he isn’t f-ing this kid and the team up. I think Tucker is a star.

Testing

He had to get the tests back to confirm mono, Lick’s not going to come out and say he has mono without the proof. And you also have the privacy issues with medical records. Lick did say repeatedly that Tucker was sick, FWIW.

What about Fuller...

why is he suddenly benched? What is the descretion there? Crabs? Jock itch? I work at a University and if the student athlete clears you to do so, privacy is a non-issue. Mono is not a socially unacceptable illness last I checked…well, unless you get it from being passed out for an hour in subfreezing temps half zoinked, that is. But even the DR article mentioned that questions have been swirling…

Right On

My bet was Anthony didn’t want anyone to know about having mono. He didn’t seem like he really wanted it out there, so it couldn’t be used as an excuse.

Howe has a great audio clip of it here:

As far as Fuller, every time he misses an assignment on D, he gets pulled. I think that must be Lick’s issue with him.

by storminspank on Jan 6, 2009 7:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And he misses a lot of assignments.

Fuller really needs to improve on defense, or he’ll continue to sit on the bench for long stretches of time. It’s too bad, because he’s one of three kids on the entire team (Gatens, Kelly) who’s truly versatile on offense. Peterson doesn’t count because he often tries to make Iowa lose.

The dude can score

he scored 12 points against Bryant WITH MONO and then scored 12 points against Drake STILL WITH MONO and NO PRACTICE TIME. That already makes him indispensible on this team. Here to hoping he gets his health and head together and forces Lickliter to play him.

by the way, if lickliter plays a 6 man rotation this next game like he did in the Indiana game, I am (temporarily) off of him. We are not going to win the Big Ten, make noise in the NCAA tournament—assuming we even make it, so PLAY the freshmen!

He's obviously the secret weapon.

We don’t want to over-use him and wear him out. He only enters late in the game when we are hovering around 40 points or so and we need a quick spark to climb into the 50’s before the game ends.

If we used him much more this early in the year, we also risk our NIT opponents having full scouting footage of him for those crucial end of the year games.

Go Hawks!
