Piolo Takes the Chiefs Job

The former Pats VP has agreed to take over the GM post for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Let the Ferentz-to-the-Cheifs talks begin. Though personally I don't think Ferentz is going anywhere, this wouldn't be a bad situation for him to make the jump. He's got a friend as the GM, doesn't have to move his family too far, and KC is a good football town/stadium. Lots of Hawkeye support down there, which wouldn't hurt...

From the Chiefs Blog:

"Ramifications of this hire:

Clark Hunt repeatedly made the point that the new Chiefs GM will be a large part of the decision on whether or not to retain Herm Edwards as head coach. More than likely, Herm will not return as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009. Pioli will almost assuredly want to work from a clean slate.

Keeping with the head coach thoughts, Pioli was also rumored to be interested in bringing either Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz or Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels with him as the new head coach. McDaniels was recently hired by the Denver Broncos.

We’ll have full coverage of the Chiefs’ head coach search as well, should it come to that.

I think you can expect a good portion, if not all, of the Chiefs’ coaching staff to leave the team at some point."

The Chiefs blog

also is running wild with speculation about a Herm replacement and says absolutely nothing about Ferentz. They seem to be concluding on Steve Spagnola. But then again they don’t know any more about it than we do.

From the WWL

"The decision to hire Pioli likely means Herman Edwards will not be back as Chiefs head coach next season. Among the top candidates to succeed Edwards is New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. "

I don’t plan on getting too worked up about this.

No mention of KF

in that article from the WWL either. As i said, i don’t expect him to go, but you never know i guess…

For what its worth...

I will be more concerned if Herm stays for year. While KF can obviously leave whenever he wanted, it seems that ship has come and gone for anything to happen this year. However, if Herm stays for a year, it would give Pioli a year to get comfortable and begin to stock the shelves. Assuming we don’t regress next year, KF’s stock will have risen more and he would be taking over a team that (presumably) had begun to narrow its talent gap.

I speculated on this in the thread under the fanpost by StoopsMyAss.

The only problem is that if you keep Herm for one year with the intention of making a run at Ferentz, and if Herm goes, say, 9-7, you’re firing a coach that took a team from 2-14 to 9-7. If Pioli wants to hire his own HC, I think he has to do it this year, and it won’t be Ferentz.

D'oh.

Sorry for the unintentional plagiarism. Great minds, I guess. I see your point. However, I don’t see the Chiefs appreciably improving next year. I think they are a couple years of away, even in the AFC West.

It's never too late

Let’s be clear about the ruthless business (as it has become) of coaching and hiring coaches. KF will of course receive a phone call, perhaps an overture, mabe even an official offer. Until he is on TV saying he is NOT taking the job, it would be foolish to act as though it is too late or that this thing is in any way over.

I repeat, everyone says this will be one of, if not the best, job opening this year in the NFL.

Of course I could be wrong, but...

I just don’t think its this year. It seems by leaving now, he would be
(a) jeoparodizing the employment status of his trusted friends KOK and Norm (albiet to a lesser degree, depending on the new coach) at a time when most comparable positions have been filed. Further, I would imagine both would have trouble getting jobs. At his best, KOK’s philosophies are slightly outdated and although Norm obviously knows his shit, I think he has admitted he only wants to coach another couple of years, which doesn’t exactly make him a likely candidate.

(b) completely gutting Iowa’s recruiting this year, with respectable, very Iowa-like class coming signed-on. Granted this true whenever he chooses to leave, but this late in the recruitting process, it would seem especially damaging as there is no way a new coach could be put in place prior to signing day.

This maybe misguided on several levels and giving way to much credit to KF the person. Nonetheless, I just don’t see him screwing his friends or the program he helped rebuild.

There's never a good time to go to the NFL

The truth of the NFL is that their regular season lines up poorly with the NCAA calendar. When the NFL dips into the college ranks for a coach, it is never good timing for the college that employs that coach.

I agree that KF has a ton of reasons to stay. He will until he is not winning football games, at which time his stock will be low in the NFL. And so goes the circle of life as a coach.

My bet is he stays at Iowa for another 5 years. My hope is he stays for at least one more year because I think this could be a hell of a good team next year.

But I’m not a good gambler and my predicitons are suspect (evidenced by my poor bowl picks). But, I would not be surprised in the least if he leaves, after all this is a pretty good opportunity as far as the NFL goes. And if he does leave, I damn sure hope there is a Plan B in place and I hope it is better than the one ISU employed.

Why go pro?

I guess this is what I never get. I understand college players going from no salary (except Ohio State players of course) to an NFL contract. For coaches, money can’t really be the issue though. Herm is making $2 Mil in KC and Ferentz will make $3 Mil next year here. So, money not being the motive what else?

Competition? You want to beat the best? You want to be on the biggest stage? Maybe I can understand that. But why would you want to do that when it is most likely going to last only 2-4 years and you are thrown out? This year shows us yet again how fast an NFL coach can go from “Genious” to fired.

Everyone knows Ferentz and his family have it great in Iowa City. What is the appeal of the pros? Maybe the recruiting takes it’s toll a bit? Maybe it would be nice to deal with adults getting arrested instead of college kids getting arrested? I am just trying to see why the grass is greener? I would rather be Hayden Fry or JoePa than another NFL coach bouncing around jobs all the time. Can anyone explain what I am missing?

I don't get it either

The only reason I would think that Kirk would go there is for change of pace and to try his hand at coaching the best players in the world. I don’t think the rewards though, in the NFL, last as long, are felt as deeply, and are as far reacching. But, we’ll see how it goes.

Reading the KC media, I'd even say guarded.

Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo is the leader in the clubhouse. Some articles on the subject aren’t even mentioning KF in passing.

Hell, even Clayton last night said he didn’t think it would be Ferentz. And that’s ESPN!

Folks 'round here don't cotton to northerners

I live in Kansas City, and if the sports subject doesn’t involve Big XII or NASCAR people around here are oblivious. Most have never heard of Ferentz or are even aware that places of fancy booklearnin’ exist outside of the Big XII. I suspect they’ll not welcome a fellow who uses correct grammar and wears non-bola ties.

From the National Football Post
I hear that after Scott Pioli makes a change at head coach and Herm "Lets Build Something Together" Edwards is let go, he will have a tough time convincing Kirk Frentz to leave Iowa. Frentz seems content to stay where he is right now.

I made a fanshot of this, but thought I should also toss it into this discussion.

Report: K.C. Chiefs To Retain Edwards As Coach

Herm Edwards is likely to stay on to finish the final year of his contract as Kansas City coach, sources close to the Chiefs told a major media outlet Wednesday.

The 54-year-old Edwards is more likely to be retained under the new leadership of general manager Scott Pioli, instead of being ditched out of Arrowhead Stadium for next season, according to sources by ESPN.com.

Please

You can’t believe anything these supposed sources at ESPN say. They were the ones telling us KF had already packed his bags.

There's a pretty big difference

Between announcers bullshitting at the end of a boring game, and stuff that they present as actual news.

Also, why the hell are you still so pissed about that?

by NorseHawk on Jan 14, 2009 10:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not pissed about it

I just don’t believe anything that they don’t report in the past tense. It’s not their fault. It’s far easier to cover a game that just happened than it is to project where a coach will end up, or a player be drafted, or whatever.
I do, however, tend to think that they, as well as all of us, jump on possibilities much harder than we should. This leads to simple bullshitting and idle speculation being presented as if there was substance behind it.
