Last man standing...

Josh McDaniels will be hired by Denver sometime today or tomorrow. In the meantime, Scott Pioli is about to ink a contract with Kansas City to be the new GM. He will be told one of two things:

1) honor Herm Edward's contract and give him one more year. If it doesn't work out, then go get your man.

2) go get your man...now.

It is pretty clear that Kirk Ferentz will be No. 1 on Pioli's hitlist of new coaches. Everything I read says that working for Kansas City is as close to NFL sanity as it gets. So, when you combine that fact with working for someone you trust, someone who even hired your son into the business (Brian works for the Pats now), and someone who will give you about as much opportunity to win as he possibly can, it just might be too difficult to pass this up--unless--you don't want to make that jump at all.

The KF goodbye watch has begun.

About the future

Kirk is still our coach, although I have to say that Kansas City seems like it would be a good fit for him. This is a strange situation. I’m 34 and I don’t really know Iowa football coaches other than Ferentz and Fry.

Let’s speculate. If Ferentz leaves, who will walk the Kinnick sidelines for the Hawks next year? Forest Evashevski and Jerry Burns are still alive.

Or maybe…dare I say… J. Leman?

Ferentz isn't going anywhere

Every report I’ve read stats that the ownership still really likes Herm (I have no idea why) and want to keep him as head coach even if they bring Pioli in.

KF rumors cooling off

I think McDaniels hiring in Denver is cooling off the KF rumors, but who knows. Another SB Nation blog called Arrowhead Pride is talking about this. They think Pioli and McDaniels might have been a package deal in Kansas City. Since McDaniels is not part of that package anymore, they think Pioli is staying put now.

I hope it is true.

I read a post

on a Patriot blog that said the offer to Pioli has been made and it awaits his signature.

Arrowhead Pride is a good blog, but engaging in complete speculation.

KC has been incredibly tight-lipped in their search for a GM, and nobody knows what is going on. From reading all the tea leaves, I still think the Chiefs will hire Pioli, but, I do not think Ferentz will leave, especially this late in the game.

Educated guess — Herm Edwards stays around for one year as a lame duck and Pioli makes a run at Ferentz immediately after the bowl game next year. This process is taking too long to play out for KF to make the jump now. Signing day is in what, three weeks?

I’d be shocked if KF isn’t coaching the Hawks in 2009.

For what little it's worth (e.g. - nothing)

the word in Dallas is the Hunt’s like Edwards and want him to have at least one more year. It’ll give thim a chance to tie the Lions record this year.

ESPN reports that Piloi's in at KC.

…anybody firing up their flight tracker? Or do we have to wait and see what happens with Herm first?

The almost unanimous feeling in KC...

…is that Herm is gone. Spagnulo of the Giants is the name du jour. I’ll be shocked if Ferentz leaves. Absolutely shocked.
