GAMELIVEOPENBLOGTHREADAMAZING: PITTSTACHE

Iowa Hawkeyes at Pittsburgh Panthers, Sep 20, 2008 11:00 AM CDT

Wannstache_medium
Is that toothpaste? Where did he get toothpaste?

All right, people. It's Iowa at Pitt. It's time to see what happens when the Hawkeyes face "actual competition" for the first time this year. It's Three Yards And A Cloud Of Albert Young vs. The Wannstache.

If you underestimate the importance of this game, don't; that's a grave error. There are only two possible outcomes:

  1. Iowa records their biggest non-conference road win since Penn State in 1983;
  2. We must sit here and explain away the fact that Iowa just lost to the Wannstache.

And that's it. Buck a quarter-century-long trend of reprehensible road play, or force us to drink suicidally and post a Wannstachalanche. No pressure, Hawks.

As for the thread, we'll be here as long as you are. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

It makes me sad that since this game isn’t on the Big Ten Network, I won’t get to see JoePa telling me to “COME TO PENN STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE!!!!!!! (SO I CAN EAT YOUR BRAINS)” I’ll really miss that.

No time of posession for Iowa

under Jake, Iowa has had the ball for about 4 minutes. That’s too heavy o our D, too much of a downer this early in the game.

We need Stanzi to keep this team rolling for more than four plays on O

Defending against Jake is like fish in a barrel. He can’t run, can’t pass, can’t lead.

I’ll gamble with Stanzi and the pass to pull this one out

Yeah, Jake has really torched...anyone

Look, I get that the fans booing him sucked, but you don’t need to go completely the other way and pretend that he’s anything other than a terrible quarterback. He’s clearly not getting it done, why not give Stanzi a chance? He’s got a lower floor, but his ceiling is way higher and maybe he makes a few plays. It’s worth a shot at this point.

Amazing what a little Time of Posession can do for a team

Danger ahead: that hot Pittsburgh running back around the outsides, or with short passses. Our D can handle everything else. But watch out for him.

Second half predictions?

The Pitt offense seems to have imploded, but who knows what happens after the break. Iowa has only scored 3 points in the third quarter after the break.

Hopefully

A quick stop by the D to start off (Pitt gets the ball). Would really hope set/maintain the momentum they built at the end of the 2nd quarter. Our first offensive drive HAS to go for a score (a FG would be fine), to keep the pressure on Pitt.

It's really hard to say

Their offense basically turtled up in the second half. I’m still not sold on the pass defense, so if they open things back up, I could see them marching down the field on us again.

Gotta love the improvements for our offense though. Getting Greene back was huge and the offense just looks much smoother with Stanzi out there. He’s not carrying them or anything, but he’s better at giving himself time with his feet and can actually make some of those short, routine passes.

Bad play calling. JC holds the ball too long, Sack.

No one has that play in their playbook

But KOK consistently calls the wrong play for the time and situation. That bubble screen call isn’t an outlier, it is par for the course with him. End around with Stross instead of Brodell (or even DJK)? Typical KOK. Wrong call at the wrong time has become his M.O. and I’m tired of it.

Well,

we make that FG and it’s 23-20, I hate to put it all on JC and the coaching staff, but you have to in this situation. There is going to be some SERIOUS hate and venom spewed JC’s way this week. Can you imagine the crowd reaction had this game been in IA city?

by The Nihilist on Sep 20, 2008 2:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Greene runs alll over Pitt but rarely sees the ball in the 4th quarter. That is all poor coaching. The Hawks have average talent with an out dated stubborn coaching staff stuck in a bygone era.

The D played solid and the Oline had some holes. Special teams sucked.

I know that JC is going to catch

a lot of flak for this, but the play calling has to come into question here. Why the bubble screen on that last drive? Maybe it was poor execution, but my god did we throw this one away!

by Mac G on Sep 20, 2008 2:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, you did miss it

He came away from a play with an obvious limp right around the time they stopped feeding him the ball. This is Kirk Ferentz team we’re talking about, if they could have kept running him, they would have. There are plenty of things to get pissed at the coaching staff for, that wasn’t one of them and you’d know that if you’d been paying attention.

by NorseHawk on Sep 20, 2008 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

We should list the top 10 bad play calls of the game. My vote for number one would be after the 2nd half Int, On first down, rolling Jake out to his right for another incomplete pass leading eventually to a quick 3 and out.

My disgust for this program is sooooo deep. Maybe some lazy Iowa Sports media can finally call out Ferentz and his staff for mailing another game in with dumb decisions.

This staff caught some lighting in a bottle from 02-4 and that is it.

What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.

Head in hands!

What has KF had to say during the post game presser?

by The Nihilist on Sep 20, 2008 2:34 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm not saying this...

to pile on JC. While he made a few mistakes, he wasn’t terrible out there today, especially in the second half. I really question some of the playcalling, particularly late in the game. Even if Greene was hurt, at least play fake to him if you’re going to pass since he’s already on the field anyway. I put that on KOK.

My issue with JC is this: after 17 games (NIU in 2006, last season and this season) in which he has been the starter or gotten significant playing time, he’s still making the same errors/mistakes that he did in game one of last year. Half a dozen passes in the dirt per game and he still hasn’t learned how to throw with any real touch which means we can’t go vertical on defenses when he’s in there (that long ball to DJK is a stastical outlier). He holds the ball too long and always looks nervous in the pocket, completely understandable given what happened last year but is no longer excusable. Christensen has shown promise, but quite frankly, it looks like he’s not going to develop any further. I’m not convinced Stanzi is the answer, he needs significant improvement, but at least there seems to be an upside with him. With Jake, I think we’ve hit the ceiling on what he is going to give us. And that’s why it’s time to go with Stanzi.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

Thank you.

There are ways to express your desire to see Stanzi play without firing cheap shots and insults at Christensen. I’m glad it found a voice here.

by Adam Jacobi on Sep 20, 2008 2:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think that's how most of us feel about the situation

OPS, it seems like you’ve grown really sensitive towards criticism directed at Jake after the booing, which is sort of understandable, but I don’t think most of the stuff said about him here is that bad. Most of the “insults” you see here are generally pretty mild stuff like “shit he threw another pass short” or something like that. I guess I don’t really see how calling out a quarterback for his history of poor play is unfair or cheap. He’s a good kid and I really do wish him the best, but he has not been a good quarterback. The team is better off giving Stanzi a shot.

by NorseHawk on Sep 20, 2008 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well,

what can we say about the upcoming Big Ten season?

-Our D is very very good, we should be able to slow almost any RB we face (Ringer, etc.)
-Our OCoordinator is a blind a-hole (seriously, I have given this man some leniency, but this game, ugh)
-We should be able to stick in pretty much any game because of our D
-The Hawks will probably end up 7-5, with a trip to Alamo Bowl or Insight Bowl
-Kirk will not make any changes to the coaching staff once again during the off-season

by The Nihilist on Sep 20, 2008 2:39 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Two things to add there Nihilist

-The Running game as really emerged this year better than we thought it would going in.
-Offensive line is starting to gel together which will hopefully improve as the season rolls on.

Norse Hawk, I watched Iowa air out several times last year when they should have ran it more. First half of Purdue comes to mind.

Hoya, you are spot on with Jake. He is a 4th year player with experience that is making the same mistakes. Somehow he is actually getting worse as he plays more.

Stanzi at least deserves some snaps in the 2nd half.

What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.

by Mac G on Sep 20, 2008 2:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I think we need a coach that can develop a quarterback. I agree with Hoya JC doesn’t appear to be getting any better. He has little pocket poise but I don’t think he deserves all the blame.

And that bubble screen play call was terrible.

by Herky46n2 on Sep 20, 2008 4:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Just because Jake hasn’t devloped doesn’t mean they can’t develop quarterbacks. Stanzi has taken a gigantic leap from last year to this year. Brad Banks developed from a good athlete who happened to play quarterback to a Heisman contender and the nation’s leader in QB rating. Drew Tate, even though he got more publicity as a sophomore, took a gigantic leap forward in his Junior year (and then crashed back to earth the next season, but that’s because he got hurt).

No argument from me on the play-calling though.

by NorseHawk on Sep 20, 2008 5:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Settle down...

It was the first game away from IC…after an emotional win. There is so much good to take from this game. We will be respectable. Remember, we are playing with guys who have not learned how to win tough games yet. We had a .500 identity and we need to turn that into some attitude. We are not there yet but after film this week, I expect these guys to think they are just a mindset away from being very dangerous. I think we will see Stanzi from here on out. We are not protecting a clean record anymore. We are fighting for respect. That changes everything. I will be shocked if he doesn’t take 75% of the snaps tthe rest of the season.
