enough is enough?

Didn't really think about this alot until now.  Just talked with my 70 year old father who lives in Iowa.  He is so disgusted by the latest felonious activity by the football team that he wants to completely shut down the Iowa football program.  Where do we rank in the country for criminal activity?  Many Iowans don't care about the record as long as things are "done the right way".  Hasn't Ferentz worn out his good will?  Isn't he failing his job as coach/teacher/parent to these young men?  If not now, at what point is he held accountable?  When you meet a young man who will be a prospective future member of your football family, isn't it your responsibility to judge if you can satisfactorily mentor/counsel/coach/parent this person?

Good point...

...but short of a crystal ball, how do you tell? Lately, Ferentz has been very quick to discipline people who step over the line but how can you tell that when you recruit them? There’s no Wunderlich test for ethics. Do you want to throw out any prospect from a “suspect” background or community? How can you tell in a recruiting visit if a kid sincerely wants to change his future or is just looking for somewhere to play for 2-3 years until he jumps to the NFL?

As for other programs, have we gotten to the point of an FSU or Miami who had a terrible reputation for “win at all costs” in the 1990’s? I don’t think so. Iowa is such a sleepy program so far removed from any major media coverage that the only thing to cover about Iowa football is who sexually assaulted whom or who charged what on whose credit cards.

Ferentz has gambled with some talented kids who have chosen some felonious paths. He’s also had some less-than-stellar players out perform themselves. It’s hard to tell which is going to be which.

Close, but not yet

Until we’re in the top-half of the Fulmer Cup standings at EDSBS, I think we’ll be ok

hate to beat a dead horse

but I just finished reading the victim’s letter dated November 19, 2007. I was impressed by the calm and rational demeanor that the writer took with this letter. I can tell you if it were my daughter and these things really did happen, I would be in prison. If these things are true (and I’m inclined to believe them based upon the detail of events), how can we believe that “Ferentz has been very quick to discipline people who step over the line”? The most disturbing thing is the abuse that the players and friends subjected the victim to after the fact. I have seen this kind of story explode here in Boulder a few years ago. There was a tipping point, and I think the Hawkeyes are approaching it at light speed.
