Mike Stoops to ISU?
The rumor down here in AZ is that Mike Stoops is one of 2-3 finalists for the Iowa State job. That in and of itself isn't that concerning; Mike isn't that good of a coach. His teams at U of Arizona have consistenly underperformed, but they are good for one big upset a year.
The kick is the supposed staff he is looking at putting together. Supposedly Chuck Long as Offensive Coordinator, who as of three weeks ago is unemployed. The other Stoops brother, Mark, as Defensive Coordinator. He's currently DC at Arizona under Mike, and his defenses have been decent in the Pac-10, where no defense is played ever. Under any circumstances (USC need not apply).
Could be a decent staff, and one with a whole lot of Iowa ties. Would be nothing more than a lateral move for Mike Stoops, but this has been his best year at UA and he has been on the hot seat for two years. He's either striking while the iron is hot, or using this as a bargaining chip to get an extension at UA. His official stance, when reached after practice today, was 'No comment.'
Something to follow in the next few days...

I think the intresting thing is
that supposedly the Arizona AD hasn’t been contacted yet.
At practice today as the Wildcats prepare to play in Saturday’s Las Vegas Bowl, Stoops chuckled when asked about the opening. "I don’t have any comment," Stoops said. "I’m getting ready to play a game here."
Iowa State has not contacted the UA athletic department for permission to speak with Stoops, Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood said this afternoon.
I’m not naive enough to believe that nothing ever happens behind the backs of the AD, but we’re certainly not in the ‘final stages’ of a deal with Stoops. (As Iowa sports radio would have you believe.)

Serious question
Is ISU using a search firm like Iowa did when they hired Lickliter, or is this business all going through the AD?

They employ a headhunting firm out of Atlanta
Same one used to get Lick, I believe.

I think it's Pollard and the school President -
- Donahue? McDonald? DeLouise? Whatever – the president. Anyway, if I glean correctly from the Cyclone fantatics at Cyclone Fantatic, he gets to interview the candidates too. But otherwise I think it’s all the AD. I haven’t seen anything indicating use of a committee or search firm.
As for Stoops, though (or any other name out there), I’ll believe it when I see it.

Kind of a group effort.

"mike stoops sucks"
That’s my neigbor, and she likes the Patriots. Which of course means she hasn’t watched a college football game in her life.
Of course, she’s right.
Oh, and Belichick rules motherfuckers.

I Don't Think UA Would Miss Him...
Mike is kind of a jackass, and has spent much of the last two off-seasons complaining about how ASU steals recruits because UA’s academic standards are ‘too strict’.
That said, UA was a complete and utter disaster when he took over, much like ISU is now, and he did an ok job turning them around somewhat…

On a related topic
Watching Indianapolis vs Jacksonville – 4th quarter, just under 5 minutes remaining.
Jax QB David Garrard throws a pick to Indy CB Keiwan Ratliff and he turns it back upfield……….Bob Sanders gets out in front of him to lead the charge and LAYS A 325 POUND JACKSONVILLE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN FLAT ON HIS FUCKING BACK.
Touchdown, Indy.

My fantasy team
Is all Colts. Between Manning, Gonzalez, Clark, and its defense (all Sanders), I already have 56 points after 1 game. A raping to be sure.
They need to rename the Jim Thorpe award to Demond Sanders.

Reminds me of something I read earlier today
on Hawkmania (article is from a few days ago). The article was about Shonn Greene and all the awards he won this year. KF made a comment about how there was no doubt he was deserving, all you had to do was watch him play. Then he made a comment about how sometimes the people in the media miss this, focusing solely on stats, by mentioning that Bob Sanders was never an All-American.
WHAT THE FUCK???!? I couldn’t believe that. I mean, sure, the sports media is nothing but conventional-wisdom spouting herd-following jackals who bring absolutely no “analysis” to the game but regurgitation of the day’s hype, but I could not believe (read: had blocked from my memory) that Bob Sanders was not an All-American. NO ONE is that dense, I thought. But, upon further review, I clearly overestimated the sports media.
All of which to say is that Bob Sanders is one of the best players in the best decade. Period. The fact he wasn’t an All-American is a crime on par with anything Pol Pot did. Stupid sports media.
Oh, and the fact that Nate Kaeding did not win consecutive Groza Awards really should have resulted in Congressional hearings.

IIRC
The all american safeties that year were Mike Doss and Troy Polamalu. Bob was up against some good competition.
by rockyh on Dec 19, 2008 11:15 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
True.
But really, “up against good competition” is only part of it. He was also up against good competition from aOSU and USC. Those two little facts trump pretty much anything else.
