Charles Barkley Unhappy About Chizik Hire, Plays Race Card

[Bumped.--OPS]

I wonder if Iowa State fans can convince Sir Charles that their Chizik Coins are actually casino tokens....

"I think race was the No. 1 factor," said Barkley, who played basketball for three seasons at Auburn during the early 1980s. "You can say it's not about race, but you can't compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume."

Who did Barkley feel was the best fit?  Well, Turner Gill, of course.  Granted, Turner Gill did a phenomenal job, but Barkley seems to be focusing on something more than credentials.

"I'm just very disappointed," Barkley said. "I just thought Turner Gill would be the perfect choice for two reasons: He's a terrific coach and we needed to make a splash. I thought we had to do something spectacular to bring attention to the program. Clearly, if we'd hired a black coach, it would have created a buzz."

Really, Charles?  If Auburn was looking to create a buzz, then they've passed with flying colors.  Think about it, who isn't talking about this hire?

Turner Gill may have been a great candidate, and probably deserved the job over Gene "Firmly Entrenched" Chizik, but I find it slightly hard to believe that he was snubbed because he is black.

Charles always plays the race card....

but in this instance he forgot it was folded on the turn. Charles is craaazuh, he a knuckolhyead. Let’s also not forget that he, too, has a white wife and is probably more sensitive to the issues of……..yeah, I can’t do it. We elected a black president by a landslide…the race card has lost some of its luster.

From what I'm hearing

at least 2 SEC coaches told Gill that he wasn’t going to get the job, not because he’s black, but because he wife is white. So, yeah, not just racism, but can’t let them black guys be around white women racism.
This whole thing gets better and better.

Really?

Mexican’t…have you ever BEEN to Alabama? I’ll assume you are from Iowa or one of the bordering states, and trust me, we have it great up here. I don’t think that the fact that Gill was black was the MAIN reason he was not hired, but I do believe it was a major factor. I mean there is a reason why people are looking around trying to find an answer about why in the hell Chizik was hired, but can’t seem to find one. Outside of the major metro areas in the south, things are still very old world down there. It’s kinda sad to see.

by mikjones24 on Dec 15, 2008 6:20 PM CST reply actions

Actually, I grew up in the south.

I spent the first 15 years of my life in Charlotte. Of course, racism did not mean a thing to me until halfway thru those years, and North Carolina is probably significantly less racist than Alabama. However, you and I are debating the racism in the general population, not university presidents and athletic directors. I simply cannot believe that Gill being black was a major reason for being snubbed. Did they think about? Probably. When they were weighing their options did it make the “cons” list? I would like to think that it did not.

I know it’s a weak argument, but I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt here, and assume they chose to go with a former coach that knows the program, or can point to a time when he was relevant in the program, over a coach that is making his living in he MAC. Of course, I could be wrong and Alabama could just be as racist as the rest of America seems to assume.

Actually

If Gill were to end up at ISU, then I’d say y’all came away ahead in that particular transaction.

For what it’s worth, on the Auburn SBNation blog, there appears to be at least some confirmation that the reason Gill didn’t get the job (or wasn’t given the proper consideration) is because he was a black man married to a white women. A number of the commenters there seem to believe that the more influential boosters who really run the show at Auburn (read: old, rich white men) were against Gill. Also for what it’s worth, most of the people on the Auburn blog are pissed that Gill was treated so shabbily and seem to prefer him to Chizik.

Turner Gill

As much as I like to see the Hawkeyes beat Iowa St; hiring Turner Gill would be one of the smartest things Jaimie Pollard will ever do. The man knows the B12, he knows the locales, and he knows football. Plus, nobody in the entire state of Iowa could care less what color his wife is, what the fuck does that have to do with coaching a football team?

Please

How can anyone with a straight face argue that Turner Gill was not a more qualified candidate than Chizik. Race of course played a massive role in this. As did regionalism. Auburn is NOT Alabama. Alabama would hire a black man before Auburn because it is oe of the premiere programs in America (historically at least) and winning is more important than race politics. Auburn though, is a whole nother ballgame. It is the lesser school academically too…so put two and two together on that one.

If ISU is lucky enough to get Gill—and they most likely will not be since he may not want to play against Nebraska and, more importantly, recruit against them—they should thank thier lucky stars.

Oh...and,

winning at Buffalo is MUCH harder than winning at ISU.

In the five years BEFORE Gill got there

…they won 5 games total. Two seasons they won only one (1) game for the entire year. Their best record in the five seasons before Gill…2 wins – 9 losses. He did the impossible. They offer fewer scholarships than all but one other major college football program. They play in a stadium that holds 29,000 people. It is a multisport facility. They travelled by bus to all but one game this year. Dude, this guy is magical. Whoever gets him will be stunned by his ability. I hate the Clones and think he will—indeed hope—turn ISU down.

ok fine

You win. I honestly think that having success at ISU has a lot to do with midwest/grassroots connections. That’s exactly what DMac had, and that’s what Gill has. We don’t want ISU to get him, because he’ll bring that same type of attitude, which will produce results.

I heard they wouldn’t take the Chizik Coins at the Meskwaki Casino in Tama. Times must really be rough.

Since we are discussing race seriously here...

I’d like to add a hypothetical situation for all of you to chime in on. Completely ignore the state of Alabama. Suppose that Gill DOES get hired at ISU. Does hiring a black coach in the state like Iowa help or hurt him on the recruiting trails? Why school hired who I think was the first black coach in Iowa 2A football and he was never well accepted (although possibly due to an anger problem). So does the same thing happen at the collegiate level? A large percentage of these midwest teams are white so do you feel white players in this area are more likely to play for a black coach or not? Not trying to excite any anger just want some people’s views.

Iowa has had quite a few black FB coaches...

…like Carl Jackson, Ron Aiken, and now Coach Campbell, yet I do not recall a single mention of whether their race played any role in their hiring, performance, or anything else.

Which is the way it should be. If Iowa hired another head FB coach if Ferentz left, I don’t think anyone would care one whit if they were non-white.

Iowa’s athletic department seems to be pretty color blind which is, as I said, the way it should be.

If it's not too much trouble, search your soul--and then ask yourself if maybe I might have a point.

Who cares.

Our first black player joined the squad in the 20’s, for crying out loud.

Evy systematically broke the color line in the 50’s.

Raveling?

The only thing I would protest is another white guy like Alford pretending to talk tough like an inner-city baller — while building a McMansion in Cor-Al-Ville.

In case we’ve forgotten, lily Iowa launched the Barack. This is an old and tired query in search of a problem.

I heard it on the radio and can't claim it myself

But some guy said “Auburn hiring Chizik wasn’t a racist move, it was a stupid move. All this proves it that people from Auburn are idiots.” Rome possibly? Anyways, funny shit.

Gill

First off, I do have to agree that Chizik was probably not the greatest hire in the world at Auburn. But his record at ISwho? over 2 years is pretty comparable to KF’s. Granted, l’Ames is not quite the football selling showcase that Iowa City is. Chizik is not that bad of a coach. He went into a horrible situation in Ames. The puzzling thing to me, is why didnt Chizik stay on at Texas until a job like this Auburn job came along? I think you can take the last 2 years with Chizik as a grain of salt. I think he could become a pretty good coach in the SEC, as he was an “elite” defensive coordinator. People are to big on Turner Gill, who I think may be a pretty darn good coach. Yes, they are going to a bowl at Buffalo. Big fucking deal. How long has Carl Peterson been in Boise and still not got a big time job. And before him, the old Boise coach had to take a crap job at Colorado after years of 10 win seasons at Boise. Urban Meyer wasnt given a big time job until he went undefeated for an entire season at a smaller school, and built the program for years to come. Gill has been at Buffalo for three years, and has 1 winning season. Yes, he has absolutely done wonders to get them to this point, but come on, if every small school coach that has a winning record deserves a bigtime job, we’d be out of big time jobs. Look at Middle Tennessee’s coach. Or Howard Schnellerberger(no idea how to spell his name). He is a proven winner. He brought a school with no tradition to a bowl game. But, since he isnt black its not a big deal that he didnt get the job. Gill’s record through 3 years is pretty similar to KF’s. After Kirk took us to the Alamo Bowl would it have made sense for Texas to fire Mack Brown so they could hire Kirk Ferentz because he took a team to one bowl in 3 years? I think eventually Gill will get a bigtime job, and be very successful, but as a university that is going to have to pay him the big bucks and live with that decision, why wouldnt you want to wait and see if he could have another winning season. This may be the best thing for Gill not getting this job. If he comes out next year and wins 8 more games, he can command any open job in the country for any reasonable amount of money he wants. Example: if our boy Mike Stoops lays another egg at AZ or Erickson at AZ State, what would Gill do down there. Something about that rings the words gold mine to me. There also are quite a few jobs that could open up in the big east and acc that could be much better for him than this auburn job(i mean common, who would want this job? they tried to get rid of tuberville multiple times(petrino incident)).

Thats just my humble opinion. My guess is Turner Gill is one year away from getting a much better, much more lucrative job.

for coaches who are truly good

there is no hurry. They are not an ACL injury away from poverty. Good today is good tomorrow. Look at the guys like Urban Meyer who can move from program to program and have success. KF is no different; he could succeed anywhere. But does he want to be anywhere? No. I suspect that Turner Gill is similar in that regard. He wisely chose to start at Buffalo, the lowest rung on the 119 step D-1A ladder. His early success is truly remarkable. Yet if he is good, he will sustain success.

Look at Leavitt at South Florida and Schiano at Rutgers. Are they still good coaches? I say yes, but many others would say (like they have said about KF) “You didn’t win 9-10 games htis year. You suck!”

looking for someone smarter than KOK...

I agree with your ACL take...

A truly ‘great’ coach can play through the pain and still be the most overpaid loser avoid poverty through a marked ‘schematic advantage’.
