"What was proven on Saturday night was what was suspected all along: The 2008 Gophers were the worst 7-1 team you could find in a BCS conference -- strictly a product of a cupcake schedule and in no way an indication Brewster was putting together something significant in his second season.

Gophers loyalists have embraced Brewster in a longshot hope that the avalanche of words contains substance and not merely salesmanship, and others have embraced him because Brewster understands the wisdom of never underestimating the naiveté of his audience.

The coach keeps saying he's 'extremely, extremely proud' of his athletes, his program and his school, and amazingly, amazingly, people react as if those words have meaning....

What the Hawkeyes demonstrated is that when a coach of substance juts his jaw and keeps working he can get his team on a 5-of-6 streak to conclude the Big Ten, and when a coach of rhetoric keeps offering meaningless blather his players are likely to suffocate."

Brewster's Millions

The high-class, high-society MN fans/journalists are like the old lady that put Dangerfield through the gauntlet of tests to gain her approval/money (from the dead). What happened to letting a coach be judged on his OWN recruits. Maybe they are just now realizing that they have another ‘Zooker’ in disguise, but I doubt it. They will run him out of town just like all of their other coaches. Tubby is next………

Reusse has been saying that pretty much all year

He’s one of the few guys in Minnesota who realized what a fraud the team and Brewster were, even as they were going 7-1. Consequently, basically every column he writes causes Gopher boards to absolutely lose their shit, which is pretty funny.

Yikes

The comments are brutal. I remember early in the Ferentz years, when I was still mad at the admin for screwing up Bob Stoops hire (although realistically I don’t think he ever was coming back), Iowa always played hard for Ferentz in hopeless causes. That has to mean something and stuck out Sat night - Minny lay down and quit at the half, even though starters played almost the entire game.

Reusse is a joke, kids.

I’ll put more stock in what you folks have to say than what that blathering fool attempts to put into print. He has a great understanding of baseball, and does a pretty good job on the sob stories, but when it comes to football, he’s woefully inept. He’s written this story a few times over the past few years (and you could replace “Brewster” with “Mason” in a few of his stories), as well as complaining about college football in general on his radio spots.

So you're saying

he’s the Minnesota version of Pat Harty? I must admit, their writing styles seemed rather similar.

I ate the blue ones ... they taste like burning.

As one Trib commenter said though,

Reusse is as much of a flip-flopper as any hometown writer. On the radio just 4 weeks ago he said that Northwestern, Wiscy, and Iowa sucked, and that the Gophers stood a pretty good chance of running the table.

Like any Minnesota fan, they stumble over each other trying to be the most cynical of their team. They have no pride. It’s truly sad.

Is there anything wrong, though?

I’ll admit: I’m a longtime Reusse reader. As a Vikings fan, I find him infuriating more times than not. That being said, is there anything here that is abjectly untrue? Did Minnesota not fold down the stretch against the “meat” of an incredibly weak schedule? Did the win at Illinois turn out to be far less than meets the eye? Did the fans get drunk on talk of New Years’ Day at 7-1, and was it not the coach standing behind the bar? Did this program in general, and this coach in particular, get taken behind the woodshed against any half-interested team it played this year?

Attack the guy all you want – on Mondays, I’ll even join you – but admit when he’s correct.

Oops Pow Surprise: "I'm stuck writing at the Titty Barn."

The Iowa debacle

doesn’t prove that Brewster is incapable of building a winning program. This was an ass kicking but Reusse had this column waiting on his hard drive for months but couldn’t publish it after 7-1.

Did he mention in there that even he apologized for his ripping of Brewster after 7-1? I doubt it.

I find this column just as “accurate” and “true” if you replace every instance of Brewster with Reusse.

what you say here can, and will, be used against you

Actually....

I hear the copy editor had to cross out the names Stoll, Holtz, Gutenkunst, Wacker, and Mason from the story before it could be printed. Reusse’s ran that story about 27 times in my life.
