Great Moments in Gopher Football: Blocked, Quite Believably

Throughout HATE WEEK, we'll be looking back at some of the memorable moments in Gopher football history.  Because all teams have moments of ineptitude, but few have so many widely available on Youtube.

October 15, 2005:

Minnesota returns to the Metrodome 5-1 after splitting road dates with Penn State and Michigan. Ranked #22, they face interstate rivals #23 Wisconsin back at the Metrodome. It's a tight affair the whole way through, but a 19-play, 80-yard drive culminates in a one-yard touchdown with 3:27 to go, and Minnesota leads 34-24. Victory seems imminent.

But wait! Wisconsin drives quickly down the field, and Brandon Williams' third reception of the drive, this for 21 yards, brings Wisconsin within three. An onside kick that can be charitably described as "botched" put the ball in Minnesota's possession at their own 11. Minnesota can't convert a first down, but they exhaust Wisconsin's timeouts and set up to punt the ball away with about half a minute to go. Victory still seems imminent.

And that is what makes the following 44 seconds so hilarious.

"Unbelievable?" Tirico, you have so much to learn about Minnesota football. We hope you watched it to the very end for the positively dickish edit job over the last ten seconds, because it's exactly what we would do in the same situation. Find the wound, pour an entire can of Morton Salt in, then piss in it for good measure.

Speaking of pissing in open wounds, Minnesota fumbled the ensuing kickoff, sealing Wisconsin's win at 38-34. Minnesota would finish 7-5 on the year. Hey, most teams would kill for the opportunity to lose in the Music City Bowl.

I'd forgotten all about that little gem.

Beautiful. Made me laugh hard enough to make my nose bleed.

Somebody needs to edit that with “Yakety Sax” dubbed over top.

You know what?

I was kicking myself when I got to work this morning for not doing exactly that.

I'm doing that as soon as I get home tonight

In fact, I’m adding that to every other thing we do this week

Sweet.

The really campy ones like on Scooby Doo and on early MASH episodes are what come to mind. And I’m not sure what one would call it, but it’s sort of a slapstick-y drum roll/drum fill – you know, the “losing balance/falling down” noise. I’m sure that could come into play with some of these Goopher hi(larious)lights.

Performance Enhancing Videos

Scothawk came out with a video right after Wisconsin 2005 and right before Minnesota. He was single handedly responsible for Drew Tate and Ed Hinkle’s performances that day. Let’s hope Stanzi and Brodell watch the same clip. Go to the video here and fast forward to 4:24.

I was at that game!

I drove down with a bunch of my friends, most of whom, including my then roommate, were Minnesota fans (I go to Luther, which is like 10 minutes from the border). Between the ridiculous amount of drinking we did and the game itself, it was one of the greatest days of my life. The dry erase board outside our door featured the score in gigantic block letters for the rest of the year.

Goddamn did I love Eddie Hinkle.

Penn State lost to Michigan that day

That gaffe was the lone bright spot. Thanks, Gophers.

Er

It was the lone bright spot from that day .

Minnesota Vs N'western is always a humiliation for the gophers.

2000, 2007, 2008 all last-minute come-from-behind laughfests. You could definitely make a yakety sax montage of those three games.

We’re getting there

So will the coup de grâce of Hate Week be...

their chokefest against Michigan in 2003 or when we were up 40-6 by the fourth quarter on ’em the same year?

from last year’s Western Michigan game. Good times.
