Yeah but apparently it's what a player does BEFORE the season that really counts -

Ringer was a known known, and Greene was an unknown known. Had Greene been as well-known of a known as Ringer, then the people in the know would’ve known about his known abilities rather than their not knowing about his known unknowns, you know?
