Let's get this started

Drake is beating ISU silly right now; the Clowns just took a timeout barely two minutes into the second half, and the score is 46-20. This is a pistol-whipping that would make Ty Cobb wince.

For those of you who enjoy watching ISU lose at anything, turn on Fox right now. They look miserable.

Davenport Sucks

I'm pretty damn sure I'm not getting either game on TV tonight.  God's punishment for supporting that misogynist Hayden Fry.

Nice

Some people here at the BHGP bunker get to enjoy watching the game while I'm SLAVING away in the kitchen making dinner, mixing mojitos, and cleaning this place!
Must be rough!

Curious?

At what hour is it acceptable to admit that you're drunk, exposed, and aroused while liveblogging a game?

Also, can we talk about things other than breasts? There are ladies here too, you know.

I once had a guy at a bar show me a picture of his dick on his camera phone that WASN'T Sean Saliisbury. You jest, but there is more than one assface like that out there.

Of course, I immediately asked him to send me a copy.

total domination by Drake

Drake 79 - Iowa State 44

Drake never trailed and continues their roll in state. Remember, Drake won the "Big 4 Classic" last season with wins over the Iowa, ISU, and UNI.
It's nice to see Keno has a killer instinct his father lacked in recent years.

by jebushchrist on Dec 5, 2007 7:52 PM CST reply actions

What's crazy...

They didn't even meet their season average tonight.

Drake looked really, really good. This game was no upset, and UNI over Iowa won't be one either (obviously).

I wonder if McDermott's regretting the 2 hour drive to Ames.

Oh jesus

Tony Freeman is going to "give it a go"?
Sounds like a really bad idea.

Just so everyone remembers, Tony Freeman isn't actually very good. I just want to remind y'all that he may be recognizable but he isn't great and does not fit well into this system.

by jebushchrist on Dec 5, 2007 8:05 PM CST reply actions

I can't actually see the game

but tip was about 3 minutes ago, so Freeman's turnover total should be into double-digits by now.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

Whoa whoa...

Who's this "Justin Johnson" character?

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 8:06 PM CST reply actions

It's official

There's a place in the state of Iowa that is offering neither Drake/ISU nor Iowa/UNI on local television.  I have chosen to live in that place.  I'm a fucking moron.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 8:07 PM CST reply actions

Unfortunatly by "not very good"

You also mean "better than everyone else on this team"

I'm not sure why he's risking further injury to his foot though.  I guess we're sorta desperate for guards, but that just seems like bad idea.

by Adam @ Black Heart Gold Pants on Dec 5, 2007 8:07 PM CST reply actions

Perhaps

But I cannot imagine Freestyle Freeman fitting into this system... and oh god the horror of his knuckleball intermediate break 25 footers...

[goes to get stiff drink]

by jebushchrist on Dec 5, 2007 8:11 PM CST reply actions

No, I agree he's not a very good fit

But he is pretty much the only dude of the team who can create his own shot and can occassionally be pretty go...

Oh fuck it, who am I kidding? He sucks.  I'm getting drunk too.

by Adam @ Black Heart Gold Pants on Dec 5, 2007 8:13 PM CST reply actions

Starting lineups

Angle
Johnson
Kelly
Cole
Looby

vs.

Josten
Brown
Dunham
Koch
Eglseder

I really hope that they listed Angle first out of alphabetical concerns, not because he'll be running the point. That would be terrifying.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 8:14 PM CST reply actions

One pass, one TO.

Time to understand the horror.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 8:14 PM CST reply actions

If you want to get really pissed

Just focus on JR Angle for awhile.  He really is terrible at pretty much everything: shooting, passing, defending, setting picks, growing hair.  It's impressive.

Hawkeye radio coverage never gets old

They've been returning from commercial to "Reelin' in the Years" by Steely Dan since Steely Dan was still popular.

Also, Angle apparently continues to suck.  I haven't heard Dolphin this agitated with a player since the glory days of J.R. Koch.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 8:41 PM CST reply actions

Steely Dan

was way ahead of their time. That still puts the radio broadcast about 10 years behind though.

by jebushchrist on Dec 5, 2007 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

You know what warms my heart?

Seeing another smaller school preoccupy themselves with the Hawkeyes to the point of making "BEAT IOWA" signs. Congratulations, UNI, you're up there with ISU, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Illinois as little brothers of the Hawkeyes.

Here Comes Justin Johnson

And Freeman might not jive with the low-turnover, high-percentage Lickliter system, but he's working tonight.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 8:52 PM CST reply actions

How do you let the shot clock run out

with 4 seconds left in the half.

You can hear Lickliter yelling at Kelly/Johnson/Freeman on the radio.  It's still better than hearing Alford do anything.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 8:56 PM CST reply actions

CONTEST!!!

Here's the halftime contest:

Seth Gorney has some... unfortunate new jailhouse ink on his doughy right shoulder. We will accept guesses from all as to what it's supposed to be.
You must get your guess in before the 2nd half starts.
Go.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Lickliter is going to fire a gun tonight.

I'm not saying he's going to kill, not saying he's going to hurt, not even saying he'll be shooting at someone; but after that shot clock violation, he's got a look in his eye that only the smell of burnt gunpowder can get rid of.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 8:58 PM CST reply actions

by jebushchrist on Dec 5, 2007 9:03 PM CST reply actions

UNI AD talking trash

Not that I disagree or anything.  There's really no reason not to play all the big in-state teams every year.

by Adam @ Black Heart Gold Pants on Dec 5, 2007 9:09 PM CST reply actions

I think I know why

He was objecting to media statements by Lickliter that basically said he didn't understand the need to play the instate teams every year. Lick's a first-year coach, and I think he'll grow to appreciate the rivalries in due time, especially as he talks to HS coaches around the state. Just a guess here, but I'd say the Big Four series is safe.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

Lickliter

They're adding more Big 10 games now, and Lickliter just said he wants to review Iowa's non-conference commitments.  He also suggested a Big 4 tournament, which I would travel to Des Moines to watch every season.  I don't think the games are going away, per se, but we may see a change in format.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:21 PM CST up reply actions

At the Well?

(as an aside, since it's the Wells Fargo Arena, I always wished they'd call it The Vault. I digress)

I'd totally go back to DM to watch a Big Four tourney. Absolutely. And not just because I know I'd get free tickets.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:24 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, at the Vault

That was the UNI AD's primary complaint:  they sell out the UI/ISU game each season, and they don't want to give up that revenue.  My response?  You're making a killing on us traveling to Cedar Falls, so if you don't want to play on our terms, bite me.

I love the Big 4 series, but the idea that these games are the mid-majors' birthright is ridiculous.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

I sort of agree.

I think a lot depends on how much the deal nets for UNI and what sort of cut they get from ticket sales. The setup at the Palestra is great for the Big 5, and nobody's going to back out of that; it'd be a PR disaster (see Tampa). So if that's the natural evolution of the series, then fine, let it be so. I don't know why Lick would demand Iowa play two games in Des Moines rather than three in the state (1.5 of which in Carver), but whatever, I'm not a coach.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:33 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know the current contract details

But I would assume it's 65/35 or 75/25, much like the Iowa/ISU football deal.  I think Lickliter would like to keep his team out of road games in openly hostile environments and would prefer a generally favorable crowd every year at a neutral site (even in Drake's backyard, the crowd would be minimum 40% Iowa), especially when the games are perceived as no-wins for Iowa (this year notwithstanding).  Plus, it takes one non-conference off the schedule when the B10 goes to 18 games in 2008 (and you know a full round robin is on its way by 2010).

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

Down 8-1 in turnover margin

8 turnovers in a half isn't terrible, but we only forced 1?  Ouch.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:14 PM CST reply actions

Just as I say it...

...turnover #2, caused by...Angle?

Ah, the quick 3 missed.  Angle had to make up for doing something right.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

Now Justin Johnson is noticeably limping.

Still a one-point game, but Iowa's a lot better off if JJ has two good wheels.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:21 PM CST reply actions

The Hawkeyes are sticking around...

The UNI fans may contest that the referees are responsible for it, but seeing Iowa up 42-38 is a heck of a surprise right now. As I said before, I think a UNI win would not be an upset.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:28 PM CST reply actions

The Liveblog going over 100 posts

would be a bigger upset than a UNI win.

In other news, I think jebus may be dead.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:30 PM CST up reply actions

The Virus with a huge and-1 to give Iowa their largest lead of the game. 8 and 3 on the day. Great to see.

50-43!

Great shot by Kelly.

Iowa might actually win this game, which makes my "eleventy billion" spread look a little silly.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:41 PM CST reply actions

Dolphin

Gary just said Kelly was "omnipresent."

Obviously, Dolph hasn't started celebrating Prohibition Repeal Day just yet.  Even more obviously, Jebus is doing Dolphin's celebrating for him.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:43 PM CST up reply actions

That's the right attitude to take.

And it's very encouraging to see a game like this.

Look, clearly the horses aren't there for Iowa to compete in the BXI this year. Everybody knows that. The key is going to be the learning process, the hustle, and the retention and development of the young kids to make them into senior leaders. We missed too much of that during the [name redacted] era, and I think we chose the right coach to bring it back.

ANGLE!

YEAH MOTHERFUCKER!

That is all.

by Patrick Vint on Dec 5, 2007 9:47 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, that is impressive

I actually thing we've got the potential to be a pretty good rebounding team.  Looby is a really underrated rebounder,  Coleman looks like he'll be a monster on the boards, and The Virus can contribute too.

And holy shit, JR Angle did something positive!

by Adam @ Black Heart Gold Pants on Dec 5, 2007 9:47 PM CST reply actions

The refs may in fact hate UNI.

Obviously the home crowd's going to go ballistic if the call is 50/50, but JJ was limping so badly on the defensive end that the refs stopped the game while UNI was running their offensive set. Somehow, the refs evaded the blow darts and Molotov cocktails.

Teams trade 3s, and it's 53-48; Angle bricks a 3 so bad it bounces harmlessly out of bounds, UNI ball, 4:35 to go.

by Adam Jacobi on Dec 5, 2007 9:48 PM CST reply actions

um

I stop for a minute and suddenly Angle has the fucking green light???
No.

by jebushchrist on Dec 5, 2007 9:48 PM CST reply actions

by Adam @ Black Heart Gold Pants on Dec 5, 2007 10:00 PM CST reply actions

How could it take them this long to press?

Seriously, we have 3 guards, 2 of them are limping, and 1 of those two is the living embodiment of the turnover.

Still 58-54, shooting foul on Cole, 54.4 to go.

I just wish they were on TV more

After the Big 4 games are over, it's back to the Big Ten Network where I can't see them.

sigh

I know, that sucks. I have BTN but so many people don't. There is no resolution in sight. Just don't take it out on the Hawks. Find a place to watch the games. These kids are going to be here for 4 years and you'll want to get to know them.

Adam

You've gotta get DirecTV or Dish so you have BTN.  Forget the fact you're missing basketball games.  Just believe me when I say there's nothing better than waking up at 3:00 a.m., not being able to get back to sleep, and having the comfort of a 2002 Iowa/Purdue football replay on the tube to lull you back to peaceful slumber.

That being said, DirecTV didn't save me tonight.  So it's not perfect.

I agree, I should

And as soon as I figure out how to hook a dish up to my dorm room, I'll get right on it.  Until then, I'm afraid I'm stuck hitting a sports bar whenever I can and maybe listening on the radio.

HOLY LORD GOD IOWA WINS

UNI is, let's be honest, far and away the best team Iowa's beaten this year. UNI is better than Iowa. Iowa was lucky that Eric Coleman was about 70%.

But fuck it! Iowa wins! 1-0 in the Big 4 baby! Fuck yeah and fuck you! Yeah!

I just read every post to get the score of the Iowa/UNI game. I deserve a cookie or a free gorney tatoo sketch.

Did Iowa really win at UNI? WOW!  When was the last time that this happened? 90s?

I heart bobby da hitman
